Devil's Lake Rocks!

Location: Devil's Lake SP

Join the park naturalist for a hike up the east bluff of Devil's Lake State Park to learn about the park's unique geology and see the beauty the park has to offer. We'll spend the evening hiking the scenic east bluff and checking out some of the park's famous rock formations. This hike will be about 3 miles and is best for adults and children ages 10 and older. This hike is part of the Wisconsin Science Festival. Meet at the park's North Shore Visitor Center.

Devil's Lake SP information

Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited. Devil's Lake offers magnificent views from 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. Enjoy lakeshore picnic areas, sandy swimming beaches, 29 miles of hiking trails, or ease into the backcountry solitude. Devil's Lake is a beautiful year-round park with an intriguing natural history along the 1,000-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail.

22nd Annual Fright Hike at Lapham Peak State Park

Each Halloween season, for two nights only, the beautiful, moonlit, paths of Lapham Peak State Park are riddled with ghosts and goblins. Walk the haunted trails, if you dare! Afterwards, enjoy live music and concessions by the bonfire. Fright Hike is a walk through the dark forest with scary scenes performed along a 1+ mile trail. Proceeds benefit the Friends of Lapham Peak's Projects that directly support Lapham Peak State Park! For details and ticket prices see frighthike.org. Also Oct. 19.

Kettle Moraine SF - Lapham Peak Unit information

The Kettle Moraine and Lapham Peak were formed 10,000 years ago when a glacier covered much of Wisconsin. Lapham Peak's glaciated topography provides excellent hiking, backpacking, and cross-country skiing on lighted trails. Climb a 45-foot observation tower atop the highest point in Waukesha County (1,233 feet above sea level).

Halloween Nature Hikes

Look up for those things with wings! Traverse through the dark autumn woods to meet the fast-flying little brown bat,, the radiant scarlet tanager,the soaring turkey vulture, dazzling dragonfly, and many more. This is not a scary hike and is best for those over 5 years of age. Groups leave every six minutes. The last hour-long hike leaves at 8:30 pm. While waiting for your hike, enjoy playing fun-filled games, making a craft to take home, or snacking by the glow of a campfire. In the event of severe weather, the event will be canceled for that night. Location: Mauthe Lake Recreation Area (located off County Road GGG south of County Road SS near New Prospect)

Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit information

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

Black River Trail Classic

The Black River Trail Classic will be held at the Black River State Forest on Saturday, October 19. All races begin in the Smrekar parking area and will take place on forest roads and trails. Runners can choose from three different distances (10K, 25K or 50K). Runner check-in begins at 6:30 a.m.

The Black River State Forest offers many recreational opportunities, including camping, hunting, hiking, skiing and ATV riding. But the Department of Natural Resources also manages this property to meet a host of other objectives, including maintenance of wildlife habitat, native biological diversity, soil and water quality, aesthetics and timber production.

Women's Walking and Wellness Program

Spend time in nature, get healthy, and train to walk the Empowered Women's Half-Marathon or 5k (Saturday, September 28) or a Willow River Trail Run--a 6.6k, 10.6k, or half-marathon-(Saturday, October 12). Weekly walking groups begin Saturday, June 8 at 8:30 a.m. at Willow River State Park. In addition to weekly walking groups, monthly programs--including yoga, healthy eating and meal planning, local foods, and other wellness programs--will be offered at the nature center.

This program is funded by an Allina Neighborhood Health Connection Grant to Gateway Arts and Wellness and is available to up to 10 community members, free of charge. Participants must commit to participate in at least 10 of the 20 sessions, which run Saturdays June 8 - October 19, 2019. Most sessions run from 8:30-10:30 a.m.

Willow River SP information

With nearly 3,000 acres of prairie, forests, and panoramic river scenery, Willow River State Park offers year-round recreation opportunities in western Wisconsin. The park is about five miles northeast of Hudson, and has a campground, a boat launch and a 400-foot beach and picnic area centered on 172-acre Little Falls Lake.

Fall is a great time to look for spiders! Drop in and play in a giant web, learn about Wisconsin spiders, and make your own spider web. Then head outside to check out the webs and web spinners at Havenwoods. Families, friends, and youth groups are invited to head over to Havenwoods on the second and/or third Saturdays of each month. Drop in any time between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to discover something new about nature.

Havenwoods State Forest is Wisconsin's only urban state forest, featuring 237 acres of grasslands, woods and wetlands in the city of Milwaukee. Hike, run, bike and watch wildlife on over six miles of trails. Explore one of the four ponds, stroll over the 120-foot bridge or find a bench to sit and relax outdoors.

Whitefish Dunes SP information

Whitefish Dunes State Park protects the fragile dune environment on the eastern Door County Peninsula. Stroll along Lake Michigan, watch waterfowl at Clark Lake, use the boardwalk to discover the wetlands or relax on one of the many trails throughout the forested sand dunes and beech forest. The park's nature center features year-round programs, exhibits and displays on ecology, geology and human history. Whitefish Dunes is a day-use park, there is no camping.

Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

Adopt a Musky, Hatchery Open House

Did you say adopt a musky? Yep. Young muskellunge are up for adoption before they get stocked into their new home - the Chippewa Flowage. Choose your fish, learn why they are tagged and how you might be able to follow them as they grow up. Snap a photo and scan your fish to get its tag number (If you want, you can even name your fish!) You will receive a certificate with your musky's number and length on it for future reference - might make a perfect gift!

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Wisconsin winters are changing with varying temperatures and snowfall. Professor Emeritus John Magnuson from the UW-Madison Center of Limnology will be giving a talk on Lake Ice Seasonality, and how that is impacted by Climate Change. This event is part of the 2019 Wisconsin Science Festival - a statewide, 4-day-long celebration of science, technology, engineering, math and art.
