Annual Candlelight Ski and Hike

Location: Red Cedar ST

Cross-country ski the candlelit Red Cedar State Trail from the Depot to the lit ice wall. Snowshoe the candlelit trail in Riverside Park. Hike the candlelit Junction City Trail. All activities start at the Red Cedar State Trail Depot, Highway 29 West. Ski rentals will be available in advance from Stout Adventures and Simple Sports. Snowshoes are provided free at the event by Mayo Clinic.

After skiing, walking, or snowshoeing, warm up with a cup of hot chocolate provided by Swiss Miss and cookies provided by Kwik Trip around the glowing bonfire. It's a fun time for the whole family to experience the joys of winter!

Red Cedar ST information

This 14.5-mile rail trail shadows the steep walls of the Red Cedar Valley from Menomonie to its connection with the Chippewa River State Trail. Along its route, the trail passes through the communities of Irvington and Downsville and the Dunnville State Wildlife Area. The trail passes by prairies, marshland bottoms, forests and farmlands, including sandstone bluffs and other unique rock formations. In the Dunnville Wildlife Area, the Red Cedar trail connects to the Chippewa River State Trail.

Pop-Up Nature: Animal Tracks

Stop in for a "pop-up" program and get your adventure on! There will be a naturalist led activity from 9:30 - 10 a.m. and again from 1 - 1:30 p.m., followed by self-guided activities you can enjoy with your family. Join the naturalist to learn how to look for animal clues, create an animal track notebook, and then go on a self-guided walk to look for tracks, signs, and scat! This program is great for all ages! Meet at the Nature Center.

Valentine Twig Wreath

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

OutWiGo Snow

Let it snow, let it snow, OutWiGo! Launch into 2020 with Wisconsin State Parks at an OutWiGo Snow! winter recreation celebration at Willow River State Park in Hudson on Saturday, Feb. 1. Round up family and friends for an active afternoon of winter hiking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, campfire cooking, s'mores and more! Participants of all ages are welcome. Cross-country ski and snowshoe rentals will be available for free by the hour on a first-come, first-served basis. A $5 admission fee applies to participants ages 18 and older, cash only. Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker or day pass required.

With nearly 3,000 acres of prairie, forests, and panoramic river scenery, Willow River State Park offers year-round recreation opportunities in western Wisconsin. The park is about five miles northeast of Hudson, and has a campground, a boat launch and a 400-foot beach and picnic area centered on 172-acre Little Falls Lake.

Learn To Ski at the Afterhours Ski Trail

January 12 and February 1 are Learn to Ski Days at the Afterhours Ski Trail. The events start at 12:30 p.m. at the Ski Trail Trailhead. Free cross-country ski lessons for both children and adults in both the classic and skate styles will be offered.

Ski rental equipment will be available until 3 p.m., but only for those who pre-register and are present to check out equipment at noon. The cost for rental skis, boots, and poles is $5 for children 12 and younger and $15 for others. Pre-register by 7 p.m. January 9 for the January 12 lesson or by January 30 for the February1 lesson. For each person renting ski equipment: provide name, whether classic or skate-style equipment is desired, shoe size, whether the shoe size is a child or adult size, sex, age, and approximate height and weight. Please also leave your name and telephone number. The afternoon of family fun is sponsored by the Brule Valley Ski Club, the Brule River State Forest and the Brule Lions Club.

Horicon Marsh Education Center information

Horicon Marsh has been formally recognized as a Wetland of International Importance by the Ramsar Convention of the United Nations. This renowned marsh is now home to the Horicon Marsh Education and Visitor Center. The Wildlife Education Program has been conducted at the marsh since the mid-1980s. This program focuses on the abundant wildlife resources of the marsh, their ecology and applied management.

Candlelight Ski and Hike

Enjoy a 1-mile loop through forest and meadow with hundreds of candles lining the trail. Following the ski or hike, participants can enjoy a bonfire with refreshments in the warming shelter. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Peninsula State Park. Pets are not allowed at the event. Event will be cancelled if weather is severe. A state park vehicle admission sticker is required and can be purchased at the park headquarters or self-registration station. A trail pass is not required for this event. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

Copper Culture Candlelight Hike and Snowhsoe

Join us for an evening hike/snowshoe at Copper Culture. A scenic trail will be lit with luminaries through the woods and along the Oconto River. The trail starts at the shelter building. Copper Culture SP information

The 42-acre Copper Culture State Park is on the north side of the Oconto River, on the west side of the city of Oconto. It was the site of a prehistoric cemetery of the Old Copper Complex people who occupied the northern Midwest from ca. 4000 - 2000 BC. The park is for day use only.

Winter Star Gazing

Look through a telescope or binoculars to bring into focus the wonders of the night sky. With the help of knowledgeable night sky observers from the Northern Cross Science Foundation, spy distant planets, dumb-bell nebulas, globular clusters, and so much more. The program will be held only if the skies are clear. This program is best for anyone more than 8 years old. Drop in any time and stay as long as you like. Meet at the Ice Age Visitor Center located at W2875 Hwy 67, Campbellsport, which is a half mile west of Dundee.

Cross-country ski or hike in the Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit by candlelight. This year's event will take place at Zillmer Trail Area (located at W833 County Road SS, Campbellsport between County Road G and Hwy 67 near New Prospect). The trail is perfect for novice skiers with no steep hills or sharp turns.

The shelter building will be open, lit and heated. At the bonfire join fellow hikers and skiers for hot drinks and snacks provided by the Friends of the Kettle Moraine. Trail passes waived for event participants, but state park vehicle admission stickers are required.

Blue Mound Candlelight Ski, Hike and Snowshoe

Join us for our annual February winter candlelight ski, hike and snowshoe event sponsored by the Friends of Blue Mound State Park. Free hot chocolate, hot cider and marshmallows will be provided. A 1 or 2 mile loop for skiing will be lit with hundreds or glowing luminaries, and a 3/4 mile snowshoe or hike trail. Warm up inside the heated "Friends Shelter" or around the bonfire. Naturalist hikes will be at 6 and 7 p.m.

There is no fee for this event, but a valid park admission sticker is required. Sorry, no pets, hiking or snowshoeing are allowed on groomed ski trails. This event is weather and snow conditions permitting. Contact the park at 608-437-5711 for updated event information.

Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.
