First Day Ski - Man Made Snow Loops

Location: Kettle Moraine SF - Lapham Peak Unit

This event is a combined effort by the Peak Nordic Ski Club and The Friends of Lapham Peak Snowmaking Project. Drop in during the day to enjoy the man-made nordic ski trails. Add your distance to the number of recorded skied kilometers for 2018! Bring water, food, headlamps (if you will be skiing when it is dark), and nordic skis. Pets are not allowed on the groomed ski trails. A state park sticker and trail pass are required and can be purchased at the property. Meet at the Evergreen Shelter and man-made snow loops. Reliable Snow is a wonderful thing to get us all off the couch!

Kettle Moraine SF - Lapham Peak Unit information

The Kettle Moraine and Lapham Peak were formed 10,000 years ago when a glacier covered much of Wisconsin. Lapham Peak's glaciated topography provides excellent hiking, backpacking, and cross-country skiing on lighted trails. Climb a 45-foot observation tower atop the highest point in Waukesha County (1,233 feet above sea level).

Drop in to hike or snowshoe 2 miles at Interstate Park to see the frozen St Croix River, spring-fed ponds, frozen waterfall and the quarry where rock was taken to build many structures and trails by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC). Meet at the Group Camp. The hike/snowshoe will take place on the Silverbrook and Quarry trails. Dress for the weather. A guided hike will begin at 10 a.m.

Interstate SP information

Interstate is Wisconsin's oldest state park, established in 1900. Located along the picturesque St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, the park provides scenic views of the river and the steep-sided gorge known as the Dalles of the St. Croix. Be part of a nation-wide initiative celebrating state parks! Rejuvenate this new year by taking a family-friendly trek led by the Friends of Peninsula State Park. Varying routes of 1 to 3 miles in length will take place on the Sunset Bike Trail and Weborg Marsh Trail. Warm up in the shelter afterwards with hot chocolate and cookies until noon. Participants are advised to bring a water bottle, binoculars and field guide, and to dress for the weather, with hiking boots or snowshoes. A state park vehicle sticker is required. No pets allowed. Sponsored by the Friends of Peninsula State Park. Meet at the Weborg Shelter at 10 a.m.

Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

If getting more exercise is one of your 2018 resolutions, then join us for a New Year's Day hike at Newport State Park! We will meet at parking lot #1 at 10 a.m. and plan to hike about 2 miles. The hike will be led by Newport Wilderness Society members Jean and Greg Wilde. Remember to dress for the weather. Bring a pair of snowshoes if the snow is deep. Join us for hot cider or hot chocolate in the park office after the hike. A 2018 vehicle admission sticker is needed and can be purchased at the park office. The hike may be cancelled if weather is severe.

Newport State Park, northeast of Ellison Bay, is Wisconsin's only formally-designated wilderness park. With 2,373 acres and 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the park offers quiet alternatives to bustling Door County. Explore 30 miles of hiking trails with hike-in campsites. There are evergreen and hardwood forests, wetlands and upland meadows.

Stower Seven Lakes ST information

Built on a former railroad corridor, this 14-mile trail begins in Amery at Harriman Avenue, travels through the communities of Deronda, Wanderoos and Nye, ending about one mile from Dresser at 90th Avenue. The trail passes through maple and oak forests, wetlands, prairies and farmlands, and past many picturesque lakes. The trail crosses between the North Twin and South Twin lakes in Amery, skirts the south end of Bear Trap Lake, the north end of Kinney lake, and runs along Dwight, Horse and Lotus lakes near the western end.

Start the New Year off with a 4-mile hilly hike on the Scuppernong Trail through the Kettle Moraine. This wide cut trail is great for conversation as we walk and experience winter in the forest. Snowshoes are welcome (if needed). Pets must be leashed at all times. A 2018 Wisconsin State Park Sticker is required - you can self-register for one when you arrive (check or cash only). Hike will only be cancelled if weather is severely cold or roads are dangerous. Our trail hotline, 262-594-6200, will be updated if the hike is cancelled. Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Hike options of varied lengths will be offered to accommodate families, and those wanting longer walks. Warm up afterwards with hot beverages and snacks at the Hausmann Nature Center. Wisconsin State Parks is once again hosting First Day Hikes on New Year's Day. These hikes offer visitors an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenated and connected with nature. Join us at Mirror Lake for an easy 2-mile hike through the park along the Echo Rock and Sandstone trails. See the lake and the beautiful sandstone rock outcroppings that surround Mirror Lake. Bring winter boots, snowshoes and hiking poles. Meet at the beach picnic area.

Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.

Wisconsin State Parks is once again hosting First Day Hikes on New Year's Day. These hikes offer visitors an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenated and connected with nature. On the Red Cedar State Trail, we'll hike about 2 miles on the southern portion of the trail, where historic Dunn, bluffs and wildlife viewing will be featured. Pets are allowed on this hike. Please remember that hiking and pests are not allowed on the groomed portion of the Red Cedar State trail. Meet at the boat landing parking lot off County Highway Y at the Dunnville Wildlife Area and Red Cedar Trail.

Red Cedar ST information

This 14.5-mile rail trail shadows the steep walls of the Red Cedar Valley from Menomonie to its connection with the Chippewa River State Trail. Along its route, the trail passes through the communities of Irvington and Downsville and the Dunnville State Wildlife Area. The trail passes by prairies, marshland bottoms, forests and farmlands, including sandstone bluffs and other unique rock formations. In the Dunnville Wildlife Area, the Red Cedar trail connects to the Chippewa River State Trail.

Hike or snowshoe a 4.5-mile or 2.5-mile loop on the Brown and/or Green Trail. The hike will be co-lead by the Ice Age Trail Alliance and the Park Naturalist. Meet at the beach parking area by the north shelter. Dogs on a leash are welcome. Stop by the Forest Headquarters with a chance to warm up and drink hot chocolate. Admission stickers are not required for this event.

Kettle Moraine SF - Pike Lake Unit information

The Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest is in the middle of the Kettle Moraine, a strip of glacial landforms which extends through southeastern Wisconsin to Lake Winnebago. The forest is named after the 522-acre, spring-fed kettle: Pike Lake. Powder Hill, a large glacial kame, provides the opportunity for a great hike and view. Visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and much more within the forest.

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Perrot SP information

Perrot State Park, where the Trempealeau River meets the Mississippi River, offers breathtaking views from 500-foot bluffs. The river bank and surrounding wetlands provide wonderful habitat for the many migratory birds that travel through this area twice a year. Unique to southwestern Wisconsin and Perrot are the goat prairies perched high on the bluffs.

At Buckhorn State Park, we'll be snowshoeing/hiking the 1.4-mile Central Sands Nature Trail. Bring your snowshoes, or check out a pair at the start of the hike (a limited supply of snowshoes are available). Hot chocolate, coffee and treats will be available at the south picnic shelter to warm up after the hike. Pets are not allowed on groomed ski trails. Meet at the South Picnic Shelter parking lot.

Buckhorn State Park is a paradise for water enthusiasts, hunters, hikers, campers and nature lovers. The park and two adjacent state wildlife areas cover more than 8,000-acres on a peninsula in the Castle Rock Flowage of the Wisconsin River and along the connecting Yellow River. Family and group campsites, unique cart-in camping, a cabin for people with disabilities, canoe trail and an accessible fishing pier, are all available at Buckhorn State Park.

At Pattison State Park, we'll be snowshoeing/hiking the 2-mile Beaver Trail. Bring warm clothes, proper footwear and a camera as you enjoy the trail's rolling terrain, some steep hills and steps, with views of Interfalls Lake, the Black River and the CCC bridge. Meet at the shelter building near the main parking lot.

Pattison SP information

Pattison State Park features the highest waterfalls in Wisconsin and the fourth highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. Big Manitou Falls is 165 feet high, and Twin Little Manitou Falls is 31 feet high. This 1,436-acre park also has a lake with a beach, a nature center, camping, nine miles of hiking trails and abundant wildlife.

Start off the new year with a 1-mile hike around rainbow lake or enjoy the glacial landscape of Straight Lake on a 2.5-mile hike on the Ice Age Trail and Glacial Trail. A warming fire will be at the Rainbow Lake shelter along with hot drinks provided by the local Indianhead Chapter of the Ice Age Trail Alliance. Snowshoes will be available first-come, first-served to borrow if there is enough snow. Make sure to dress for the weather. Event will be cancelled if weather is severe.

Straight Lake SP information

A pristine natural area and quiet beauty are found at Straight Lake in northwest Wisconsin. This 1,800-acre park is open to foot traffic only. Lake views and glacial features provide great vistas on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail within the park. Fishing is allowed and boats may be carried in to fish.

Celebrate the New Year with a hike through Harrington Beach State Park. Hikes will be self-guided so you may choose to hike as long as you would like! Drop in anytime between 1-3 p.m. at the Ansay Welcome Center for a warm fire, along with hot beverages and tasty treats. Trails are not groomed for skiing. Pets are not allowed on the White Cedar Nature Trail. This event is sponsored by Friends of Harrington Beach State Park. Meet at the Ansay Welcome Center.

Harrington Beach SP information

Harrington Beach State Park has more than a mile of beach along Lake Michigan. This 715-acre park also features a white cedar and hardwood swamp, old field grasslands with restored wetland ponds and a scenic limestone quarry lake. Camp, sunbathe, picnic, hike, bird watch, fish or practice astronomy. An observatory is open to the public for monthly viewings.
