Interstate is Wisconsin's oldest state park, established in 1900. Located along the picturesque St. Croix National Scenic Riverway, the park provides scenic views of the river and the steep-sided gorge known as the Dalles of the St. Croix. If getting more exercise is one of your 2020 resolutions, then join us for a New Year's Day hike at Newport State Park! We will be hiking on the Fern Trail where snowshoes are permitted, so you may want to bring a pair if the snow is deep. Poles and/or walking sticks are encouraged.

After the hike, please plan on joining us for cider and hot chocolate in the Nature Center, Lot 1. A 2020 vehicle admission sticker is needed and can be purchased at the park office. The hike may be cancelled if weather is severe. Sponsored by the Newport Wilderness Society.

Newport SP information

Newport State Park, northeast of Ellison Bay, is Wisconsin's only formally-designated wilderness park. With 2,373 acres and 11 miles of Lake Michigan shoreline, the park offers quiet alternatives to bustling Door County. Explore 30 miles of hiking trails with hike-in campsites. There are evergreen and hardwood forests, wetlands and upland meadows.

Location: Peninsula SP

Rejuvenate this new year by taking a family-friendly 1-3 mile trek led by the Friends of Peninsula State Park followed by hot chocolate and cookies at the warming shelter. Participants are advised to bring a water bottle, binoculars and field guide, and to dress for the weather, with hiking boots or snowshoes. A 2020 state park vehicle sticker is required. No pets allowed. Sponsored by the Friends of Peninsula State Park. Meet at the Warming Shelter on Highland Road at 10 a.m., parking available in Lot 5.

Peninsula SP information

Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

Welcome 2019 with the Friends of the Stower and America's State Parks! First Day event will be hike, snowshoe, fat bike and ski. Meet at Soo Line Park in Amery and enjoy a beautiful trek down the Stower. Don't forget layers and water! Event will be canceled if temp is below zero at start time. Hope to see you on the trail!

Stower Seven Lakes ST information

Built on a former railroad corridor, this 14-mile trail begins in Amery at Harriman Avenue, travels through the communities of Deronda, Wanderoos and Nye, ending about one mile from Dresser at 90th Avenue. The trail passes through maple and oak forests, wetlands, prairies and farmlands, and past many picturesque lakes. The trail crosses between the North Twin and South Twin lakes in Amery, skirts the south end of Bear Trap Lake, the north end of Kinney lake, and runs along Dwight, Horse and Lotus lakes near the western end.

Start 2020 with a 2.3-mile hike on the hilly and wooded Scuppernong Hiking Trails. Stick around afterwards for free hot chocolate in the heated shelter building. Hikers may also hike the 4.1- or 4.9-mile looping trails on their own. Pets are allowed on trails if leashed, but not in the shelter building. The Scuppernong Hiking Trails are located at S58W35820 County Road ZZ, Dousman, WI 53118.

Kettle Moraine SF - Southern Unit information

More than 22,000 acres of glacial hills, kettles, lakes, prairie restoration sites, pine woods and hardwood forests can be found in the Southern Unit, making this a popular area for a wide variety of visitors. The Forest is 30 miles long, extending from the village of Dousman, almost to the city of Whitewater. The forest headquarters is 3 miles west of the village of Eagle on State Highway 59.

Location: Kettle Moraine SF - Lapham Peak Unit

Join the Ice Age Trail Alliance on a guided hike. Meet at the Hausmann Nature Center, where hikes will begin at 11 a.m. Several options will be available, ranging from a short hike for families with children to longer hikes for those preferring to go a greater distance. Hot beverages and snacks will follow the hikes. As always, hikers should dress appropriately for the weather. A State Park sticker or a $5 day-use pass is required to enter the park. Follow the yellow Ice Age Trail event signs once in the park.

Kettle Moraine SF - Lapham Peak Unit information

The Kettle Moraine and Lapham Peak were formed 10,000 years ago when a glacier covered much of Wisconsin. Lapham Peak's glaciated topography provides excellent hiking, backpacking, and cross-country skiing on lighted trails. Climb a 45-foot observation tower atop the highest point in Waukesha County (1,233 feet above sea level).

The Friends of Perrot State Park will lead a hike that will proceed from the maintenance building out to the mounds near the nature center, up to the cliffs of Walnut Trail, and back. Please note the hike distance could be modified due to weather conditions. Dress for the weather conditions in clothing layers, boots, gloves, and a hat. Bring a camera and water. Hot chocolate will be provided by the Friends of Perrot State Park. Please note that there is no charge for this event, however, the state park system admission fee is required and can be purchased in advance, or at the self-registration station outside the office upon arriving at the property. The park office will be closed January 1 due to the holiday.  Meet at the north side of the park at the maintenance building.

Perrot SP information

Perrot State Park, where the Trempealeau River meets the Mississippi River, offers breathtaking views from 500-foot bluffs. The river bank and surrounding wetlands provide wonderful habitat for the many migratory birds that travel through this area twice a year. Unique to southwestern Wisconsin and Perrot are the goat prairies perched high on the bluffs.

Wisconsin State Parks is once again hosting First Day Hikes on New Year's Day. These hikes offer visitors an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenated and connected with nature. Join us at Mirror Lake for an easy 2-mile hike through the park along the Echo Rock and Sandstone trails. See the lake and the beautiful sandstone rock outcroppings that surround Mirror Lake. Bring winter boots, snowshoes and hiking poles. Meet at the beach picnic area.

Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.

Location: Red Cedar ST

Join us on the Red Cedar State Trail from Noon to 2 p.m. for a wildlife and history hike/ski. Bring your cross-country skis and binoculars and meet at the Depot Visitor Center Red Cedar State trailhead parking lot. The hike will take place on the Junction Trail going north from the Visitor Center, and the ski will be on the Red Cedar Trail going south from the Visitor Center. State trail passes are required for skiing and will be available to purchase the day of the event. The Visitor Center will be open with restrooms inside. This event may be canceled due to weather.

Red Cedar ST information

This 14.5-mile rail trail shadows the steep walls of the Red Cedar Valley from Menomonie to its connection with the Chippewa River State Trail. Along its route, the trail passes through the communities of Irvington and Downsville and the Dunnville State Wildlife Area. The trail passes by prairies, marshland bottoms, forests and farmlands, including sandstone bluffs and other unique rock formations. In the Dunnville Wildlife Area, the Red Cedar trail connects to the Chippewa River State Trail.

Kettle Moraine SF - Pike Lake Unit information

The Pike Lake Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest is in the middle of the Kettle Moraine, a strip of glacial landforms which extends through southeastern Wisconsin to Lake Winnebago. The forest is named after the 522-acre, spring-fed kettle: Pike Lake. Powder Hill, a large glacial kame, provides the opportunity for a great hike and view. Visitors can enjoy camping, swimming, hiking, fishing, picnicking, and much more within the forest.

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Wisconsin State Parks is once again hosting First Day Hikes on New Year's Day. At Buckhorn State Park, meet at south shelter parking lot and join park staff and friends members to hike the Central Sands Nature trail and look for signs of wildlife along the trail. Hot drinks and treats will be available at the parking area to warm up after the hike. Park stickers are required and can be purchased at the office.

Buckhorn SP information

Buckhorn State Park is a paradise for water enthusiasts, hunters, hikers, campers and nature lovers. The park and two adjacent state wildlife areas cover more than 8,000-acres on a peninsula in the Castle Rock Flowage of the Wisconsin River and along the connecting Yellow River. Family and group campsites, unique cart-in camping, a cabin for people with disabilities, canoe trail and an accessible fishing pier, are all available at Buckhorn State Park.

Roche-A-Cri SP information

Roche-A-Cri State Park, established in 1948, protects a 300-foot-high rock outcropping and Native American petroglyphs and pictographs. The name "Roche-A-Cri" comes from French words meaning "crevice in the rock." The park has 41 rustic campsites and five miles of hiking trails within a forest of large oaks and pines. Carter Creek in the park offers fishing opportunities.

Straight Lake SP information

A pristine natural area and quiet beauty are found at Straight Lake in northwest Wisconsin. This 1,800-acre park is open to foot traffic only. Lake views and glacial features provide great vistas on the Ice Age National Scenic Trail within the park. Fishing is allowed and boats may be carried in to fish.

Wisconsin State Parks is once again hosting First Day Hikes on New Year's Day. These hikes offer visitors an opportunity to begin the New Year rejuvenated and connected with nature. This year at Devil's Lake, we are going to take a twilight hike/snowshoe through Steinke Basin. Dress warm and bring a flashlight and your snowshoes (if we have snow). We'll have snowshoes to loan as well. Meet at the Steinke Basin parking lot on Hwy DL.

Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited. Devil's Lake offers magnificent views from 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. Enjoy lakeshore picnic areas, sandy swimming beaches, 29 miles of hiking trails, or ease into the backcountry solitude. Devil's Lake is a beautiful year-round park with an intriguing natural history along the 1,000-mile Ice Age National Scenic Trail.
