Brule River Candlelight Ski and Snowshoe

Time: 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
Activities: Candlelight events, Cross country ski, Night event, Outdoor activity, Snowshoeing
Location: Brule River SF

Candles will light 5 kilometers of the After Hours Ski Trails including part of the snowshoe trail. Grills, picnic tables and a bonfire will be provided. New comers to the Afterhours Trail will find a beautiful warming chalet where hot chocolate and hot apple cider will be provided. This is always a fun event and families are strongly encouraged to attend. Trail passes are not required for this event, which is sponsored by the Brule River State Forest with volunteer assistance from the Brule Valley Ski Club [exit DNR].

The Brule River State Forest offers exceptional recreational opportunities, including wildlife viewing, a 16-mile stretch of the North Country National Scenic Trail, eight miles of frontage on Lake Superior, the Bois Brule State Fish Hatchery and much more.

Winterfest and Candlelight Snowshoe/Hike

Location: Merrick SP

Join us at Merrick State Park for our fourth annual Winterfest! Fun activities are planned throughout the night! Try snowshoeing or hiking on a trail lit by hundreds of glowing luminaries. Professor Jennifer Anderson, from Winona State University, and geo-science students, will have telescopes for viewing of the night sky. Warm up by the bonfire, enjoy hot chocolate, have a hot dog or make a s'more. Some snowshoes will be on hand for visitors to borrow. If there's not enough snow for snowshoeing, event will be held as a hike. In the event of inclement weather this program will be cancelled. Park stickers are required and will be available for purchase. Please, no pets. Meet at the Nature Center (near the playground). Sponsored by the Merrick T.U.R.T.L.E.S (the park Friends Group).



Merrick SP information

Located along the lazy Mississippi River and surrounded by the hills of Wisconsin's Coulee Region, the 322-acre Merrick State Park is popular with anglers and boaters. The marshy backwaters are home to a variety of fish, birds, animals and plants. Rising and falling river levels, though controlled some by dams, are part of the natural environment.

Candlelight ski, hike and snowshoe

Cold temperatures prevented us from hosting our annual Candlelight Event in January, hopefully this time around warmer weather prevails! Come out and ski, hike or snowshoe by candlelight around Hartman Creek State Park! Start at the shelter by Hartman Lake, where fires and snacks will be waiting, and then continue around the lake and woods. We have approximately 2 miles of hiking trails illuminated and 1 mile of ski trails. A vehicle admission sticker is required. This event is sponsored by the Friends of Hartman Creek State Park.

This 1,500-acre quiet and friendly natural gem is located near the beautiful spring-fed Chain O'Lakes. Camping, recreation opportunities, the Hellstad House Log Cabin, Whispering Pines day use area, and seven lakes with crystal clear waters make Hartman Creek a popular destination in central Wisconsin.

Willow River Candlelight Ski, Hike and Snowshoe

Join the fun at Willow River's Nature Center for our annual candlelight event. Enjoy 2-3 miles of candlelit trails for skiing, hiking and snowshoeing. There will be two bonfires and refreshments will be available. No pets allowed. This event is sponsored by The Friends of Willow River and Kinnickinnic State Parks. With nearly 3,000 acres of prairie, forests, and panoramic river scenery, Willow River State Park offers year-round recreation opportunities in western Wisconsin. The park is about five miles northeast of Hudson, and has a campground, a boat launch and a 400-foot beach and picnic area centered on 172-acre Little Falls Lake.

Candlelight hike and astronomy viewing

Location: Wyalusing SP

Join the Friends of Wyalusing State Park for a winter candlelight hike and astronomy viewing with the StarSplitters. Enjoy the torch-lit trail as it follows Whitetail Meadows Trail through prairie and woods. Enjoy star gazing in the crisp cool winter air. Telescopes and astronomy information will be presented by the StarSplitters. There will be bonfires and refreshments available to warm you up. All activities will start at the Larry Huser Astronomy Building. Sponsored by the Friends of Wyalusing and StarSplitters of Wyalusing. A park sticker is required and can be purchased at the park office. NOTE: a previous listing stated there may be skiing with enough snow.  There will not be skiing during this event, just a hike.

At Wyalusing State Park, camp 500 feet above the confluence of the Wisconsin and Mississippi rivers. One of Wisconsin's oldest state parks, Wyalusing features family and group camps, hiking trails, a canoe trail, Native American burial mounds, bird watching, fishing, boating, bicycling, and picnicking near several scenic overlooks of the river valleys below.

Candlelight Ski and Hike

Location: Governor Thompson SP

Join us at Gov. Thompson State Park for a fun-filled evening of candlelit skiing and hiking. Warming fires and hot chocolate provided! Meet at the Woods Lake Picnic Area. The park and trails will be lit by candle luminaries and accented with ice sculptures. Skiers can take an easy 1-mile loop candlelit trail groomed for both classic (diagonal striding) and skate skiing as it weaves through the woods. Hikers are welcome to hike another 1-mile candlelit trail with scenic views over Woods Lake. Hikers, snowshoers and pets are not allowed on the ski trail, but are welcome on the hiking trail. Original ice sculptures will be on display.  Vehicle admission (park sticker) is required and can be purchased at the park office.


Governor Thompson SP information

Governor Thompson State Park was established in 2000, the Wisconsin State Park System's centennial year. With more than 2,800 acres of woods, a family campground, picnic area on Woods Lake, skiing and hiking trails, and six miles of shoreline on the Caldron Falls Flowage, visitors will find an atmosphere that is perfect for solitude, reflection, and recreation.

New Glarus Woods State Park Candlelight Snowshoe

Hike/snowshoe the 0.4 mile luminary lit Basswood Nature Trail loop. Enjoy a toasty campfire, S'mores and hot chocolate at the shelter building in the main picnic area after your candle lit adventure. A Wisconsin State Park admission sticker is required on all vehicles parking at the Woods. Sponsored by the Friends of New Glarus Woods. NOTE: If there is no snow on Saturday February 16, the alternate date will be Saturday February 23


New Glarus Woods SP information

New Glarus Woods is a 435-acre state park offering camping, hiking, picnicking and snowshoeing. The park also offers direct access to The Sugar River State Trail, a 24-mile linear trail surfaced with compressed limestone screenings, for bicycling, hiking, snowmobiling and, in some areas, hunting.

Winterfest and Candlelight Hike

Location: Pattison SP

Enjoy a winter night at Pattison State Park! Glowing luminaries will line your path for classic skiing and hiking/snowshoeing and there will also be a sledding hill. The Friends of Pattison and Amnicon Falls will be providing crafts in the Historic CCC Shelter Building where there will be two giant fireplaces for warming up by and a place to cook hot dogs or marshmallows for s'more's. The Friends will provide all the supplies for s'mores, plus chili, hot cocoa, cookies and coffee. This event is for the whole family!  A vehicle admission sticker will be required.



Pattison SP information

Pattison State Park features the highest waterfalls in Wisconsin and the fourth highest waterfall east of the Rocky Mountains. Big Manitou Falls is 165 feet high, and Twin Little Manitou Falls is 31 feet high. This 1,436-acre park also has a lake with a beach, a nature center, camping, nine miles of hiking trails and abundant wildlife.

Urban Candlelight Hike

For the third year in a row, hardy northerners will cure their cabin fever at this winter Urban Candlelight Hike on the Hank Aaron State Trail in Three Bridges Park. Two miles of candlelit trails on the Hank Aaron State Trail - this event will take place with or without snow! Roaring campfires! From 5:30-7:30 p.m. there will be free fat tire bike demos on site to try and testf. This is your chance to get on a fat tire bike. All ages and abilities are welcome to stop by and check one out. See why fat tire cyclists have more fun all year round! There are additional activities for thos who purchase a "Fun Pass." Hank Aaron ST information

Named in honor of baseball legend Hank Aaron, this trail provides a continuous connection between Milwaukee's Miller Park Stadium and the Lake Michigan lakefront, as well as providing connections to famous Milwaukee landmarks such as the historic Ward Theatre on the grounds of the National Soldiers Home, the Wisconsin State Fair Park and the Pettit National Ice Center. Eventually the trail will connect with the Oak Leaf Trail near the Milwaukee/Waukesha county line and run along the southern edge of the Milwaukee County Zoo.

Candlelight Snowshoe Hike

Location: Rib Mountain SP

The Friends of Rib Mountain State Park invite the public to explore Rib Mountain State Park on snowshoes. There will be hot chocolate, hot cider, and special goodies, as well as marshmallows to roast around the campfire. Start your hike at the new Friends Gathering Space, just past the Park office. Some snowshoes are available to borrow but we suggest you bring your own snowshoes if you have them. Donations to cover costs are welcome. A park annual or daily admission sticker is required. Parking is limited, so please consider carpooling. For more information or if the weather is questionable, you can check the Friends' website at or call the Park at 715-842-2522.


Rib Mountain SP information

This billion-year-old hill is one of the oldest geological formations on earth. Rib Mountain State Park is a premier day-use facility with picnicking, hiking trails and a reservable amphitheater. The top of the 60-foot observation tower offers spectacular views of the Wausau area and Wisconsin River. Granite Peak Ski Area is on the north face of the mountain and offers downhill skiing and snowboarding during winter.

The Friends of Big Foot Beach State Park are hosting a candlelight hike at the park shelter. Enjoy an evening hike, then warm yourself by the bonfire while enjoying hot chocolate and s'mores. Fun for all ages! A daily or annual park admission sticker is required.


Big Foot Beach SP information

This 271-acre park on the shore of Geneva Lake offers wooded campsites, a sand beach, 6.5 miles of hiking trails, and picnic areas. No alcoholic beverages are allowed anywhere in the park.
