Annual Candlelight Ski and Hike

Cross-Country Ski the candlelit Red Cedar State Trail from the Depot to the lit ice wall. Snowshoe the candlelit trail in Riverside Park. Hike the candlelit Junction City Trail. All activities start at the Red Cedar State Trail Depot, Highway 29 West. Enjoy free hot chocolate and door prizes provided by the . There will be a bonfire will keep you warm and the depot will be open. Skis are required for the Red Cedar State Trail. Bring your own skis, or a limited number are available for rental at Stout Adventures - 715-232-5625. Bring your own snowshoes or use for free, snowshoes are generously provided by the Mayo Clinic Health System. Red Cedar ST information

This 14.5-mile rail trail shadows the steep walls of the Red Cedar Valley from Menomonie to its connection with the Chippewa River State Trail. Along its route, the trail passes through the communities of Irvington and Downsville and the Dunnville State Wildlife Area. The trail passes by prairies, marshland bottoms, forests and farmlands, including sandstone bluffs and other unique rock formations. In the Dunnville Wildlife Area, the Red Cedar trail connects to the Chippewa River State Trail.

Turtle-Flambeau Candlelight Ski and Snowshoe

Join us at the MECCA Ski Trails for our annual winter skiing and snowshoeing event! There will be a warming fire, hot chocolate, hot cider and of course, sweet treats for all, sponsored by the MECCA Cross-Country Ski Club. The trail begins at the heated trailhead cabin on Fierick Road in Mercer. Watch for the signs. Trail passes or park stickers are not required but donations will be graciously accepted. See you on the trail!

Richard Bong SRA information

Once designated to be a jet fighter base, Richard Bong State Recreation Area is fittingly named after Major Richard I. Bong, a Poplar, WI native who was America's leading air ace during World War II. The air base was abandoned three days before concrete was to be poured for a 12,500-foot runway. Local citizens had the foresight to protect this open space for future generations.

Candlelight ski, snowshoe and family sledding party

Join us for winter activities at the beach area picnic pavilion at Brunet Island State Park! Enjoy sledding down the beach hill or strap on the skis for a beautiful candlelight ski. The trail will also be groomed for hiking or snowshoeing along the cross-country trail. The fireplaces will be stoked and hot refreshments and hot dogs will be waiting to warm you! No pets allowed  Cross-country skis and snowshoes will be available for loan. 3-5 p.m. sledding; 5-7 p.m. candlelight ski and snowshoe.

Supported by Cornell/Lake Holcombe Community Ed, Cornell Cub Scouts, Cornell Lions, and the Cornell Area Betterment Association.

Come join the Friends of Whitefish Dunes State Park and enjoy Whitefish Dunes' annual candlelight event. Separate trails, lit by luminaries, will be available for hikers and skiers. The shelter features a warming fire along with hot beverages and popcorn. Please leave your pet at home as they are not allowed on the trails or in the shelter building.

Whitefish Dunes SP information

Whitefish Dunes State Park protects the fragile dune environment on the eastern Door County Peninsula. Stroll along Lake Michigan, watch waterfowl at Clark Lake, use the boardwalk to discover the wetlands or relax on one of the many trails throughout the forested sand dunes and beech forest. The park's nature center features year-round programs, exhibits and displays on ecology, geology and human history. Whitefish Dunes is a day-use park, there is no camping.

This event has been cancelled due to poor trail conditions.

Come join the Friends of Point Beach State Forest to enjoy Point Beach's annual winter candlelight event! A 1-mile trail will be lit by luminaries for hikers and skiers. The lodge features two warming fires along with food and refreshments. Leashed pets are allowed on the hiking trail portion, but are not allowed in the Lodge building. Park admission fees are required and can be purchased at the office.

Point Beach SF information

Point Beach State Forest features 3,000 acres of land and six miles of sandy beach along the shores of Lake Michigan. Point Beach offers family campsites, two large group cabins and an outdoor group camp. A popular feature within the property is the Rawley Point Lighthouse, which has been operated and maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard since 1853.

Friends of Lapham Peak Annual Candlelight Ski/Hike

Location: Kettle Moraine SF - Lapham Peak Unit

The Friends of Lapham Peak (exit DNR) will host the annual Candlelight Ski/Hike at the Homestead Hollow Picnic Area. Ski, snowshoe or hike by candlelight on a 1-mile (1.5 km) trail! Afterwards, a campfire and grill will be available for use, and hot beverages and treats will be available for a small donation in the Trecker Lodge.

Parking inside of the property is limited to approximately 450 vehicles. Carpooling is encouraged. Parking for cars and pickup trucks only--no trailer, bus or RV parking. There is no roadside parking. A 2019 Wisconsin State Park annual vehicle admission sticker or a $5 Special Event daily vehicle admission fee is required per car.

In addition to the vehicle admission, a free ticket voucher is required for each vehicle that wishes to attend the event. Vouchers will be available at the park office beginning Jan. 1, 2019. Please call the park office at 262-646-3025 to ensure vouchers are still available. Limit one per person at time of pickup. Park staff encourages people wishing to participate in the candlelight hike to pick up a voucher at the Lapham Peak office prior to 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 25, 2019.

Ticket vouchers will specify the admission time and presented at the gate for access. Entrants should arrive during the time frame specified. Ticket voucher time frames:

  • 6 to 7 p.m., Max 250 cars with reservation
  • 7 to 8 p.m., Max 150 cars with reservation
  • 8 to 8:30 p.m., Entrance gate discretion (Late skiers must start by 8:45 p.m.)

Kettle Moraine SF - Lapham Peak Unit information

The Kettle Moraine and Lapham Peak were formed 10,000 years ago when a glacier covered much of Wisconsin. Lapham Peak's glaciated topography provides excellent hiking, backpacking, and cross-country skiing on lighted trails. Climb a 45-foot observation tower atop the highest point in Waukesha County (1,233 feet above sea level).

Learn To Ski at the Afterhours Ski Trail

January 13 and February 2 are Learn to Ski Days at the Afterhours Ski Trail. The events start at 12:30 p.m. at the Ski Trail Trailhead. Free cross-country ski lessons for both children and adults in both the classic and skate styles will be offered.

Ski rental equipment will be available until 3 p.m., but only for those who pre-register and are present to check out equipment at noon. The cost for rental skis, boots, and poles is $5 for children 12 and younger and $15 for others. Pre-register by 7 p.m. January 10 for the January 13 lesson or by January 31 for the February 2 lesson. Call Bob Cragin, 218-348-5200 or Phil Anderson, 715-372-5004 to register.

Enjoy a 1-mile loop through forest and meadow with hundreds of candles lining the trail. Following the ski or hike, participants can enjoy a bonfire with refreshments in the warming shelter. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Peninsula State Park. Pets are not allowed at the event. Event will be cancelled if weather is severe. A state park vehicle admission sticker is required and can be purchased at the park headquarters or self-registration station. A trail pass is not required for this event. Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

Cross-country ski or hike in the Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit by candlelight. At the bonfire join fellow hikers and skiers for hot drinks and snacks provided by the Friends of the Kettle Moraine. The trail is perfect for novice skiers with no steep hills or sharp turns. The Zillmer shelter building will be open, lit, and heated. Location: Zillmer Trail Area (located off County Road SS between County Road G and Hwy 67 near New Prospect). Cross-country ski or hike in the Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit by candlelight. A Wisconsin State Park vehicle admission sticker is required.

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. Black River State Forest candlelight ski and snowshoe

Join forest staff and the Black River Forest Trail Foundation for a night of skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and fun! A 1.5-mile ski trail and a 1-mile snowshoe/hike trail will be lit with candle luminaries. Warm up around a large bonfire or in the heated shelter. Hot chocolate and hot dogs will be available for purchase. A raffle will be held with great prizes! Meet at the Smrekar shelter located 4 miles east of Millston off County Road O. This event will still be held as a hike/snowshoe if there is not enough snow for skiing.

27th Annual Flambeau River Candlelight Ski and Hike

Get outside this winter and enjoy lighted trails at the Flambeau River State Forest. A 1.8 kilometer loop of the Flambeau Hills Trail will be groomed, tracked and lit with more than 600 candles. The trail winds through the heart of the forest and is wide enough for diagonal striders and skate skiers. Hiking and snowshoeing are also permitted on the trail during this event. Picnic tables and a large grill will be available, with refreshments/snacks provided. There will also be large warming fires maintained throughout the night. Trail pass fees are waived during the event. This event will take place regardless of snow conditions - if there is no snow, take a candlelight walk. Photo by Jim Kuchler. Flambeau River SF information

The forest offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Canoeing is the most popular activity on the forest. Different portions of the river offer varying degrees of difficulty. The North Fork is ideal for the novice, while South Fork is for the advanced paddler. Musky, sturgeon, trout, walleye, bass and panfish can be caught from the river as well as the lakes in the forest. The forest is open to public hunting for bear, waterfowl, deer and grouse, just to name a few.

2019 Learn to Cross-country Ski and Snowshoe

The talented folks at Wildside Actions Sports are bringing their knowledge and equipment out to Mirror Lake State Park for a fun afternoon of instruction and adventure for anyone who is interested in learning how to cross-country ski. They are also bringing their fleet of snowshoes out and Mirror Lake's volunteer naturalist Marty along with a couple of experienced Friends members will be here for snowshoe instruction and adventure around the park. Free rentals with signed waiver. No pre-registration is necessary, rental equipment is limited so sharing is being encouraged. You are welcome to bring your own equipment as well. We will also have a bonfire going and some hot chocolate to help stay warm. Meet at Winter Rec Area.

Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.

Telescopes and astronomy information will be presented by the Astro Educators provided by our neighbors at the Kickapoo Valley Reserve. All activities will start near the park maintenance shop.
