Annual Candlelight Ski and Hike

Time: 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Location: Red Cedar ST

Cross-country ski the candlelit Red Cedar State Trail from the Depot to the lit ice wall. Snowshoe the candlelit trail in Riverside Park. Hike the candlelit Junction City Trail. All activities start at the Red Cedar State Trail Depot, Highway 29 West. Ski rentals will be available in advance from Stout Adventures and Simple Sports. Snowshoes are provided free at the event by Mayo Clinic.

After skiing, walking, or snowshoeing, warm up with a cup of hot chocolate provided by Swiss Miss and cookies provided by Kwik Trip around the glowing bonfire. It's a fun time for the whole family to experience the joys of winter!

Red Cedar ST information

This 14.5-mile rail trail shadows the steep walls of the Red Cedar Valley from Menomonie to its connection with the Chippewa River State Trail. Along its route, the trail passes through the communities of Irvington and Downsville and the Dunnville State Wildlife Area. The trail passes by prairies, marshland bottoms, forests and farmlands, including sandstone bluffs and other unique rock formations. In the Dunnville Wildlife Area, the Red Cedar trail connects to the Chippewa River State Trail.

Copper Culture Candlelight Hike and Snowhsoe

Join us for an evening hike/snowshoe at Copper Culture. A scenic trail will be lit with luminaries through the woods and along the Oconto River. The trail starts at the shelter building. A warming fire and hot chocolate is provided. The event is free but donations are appreciated. Well behaved, leashed pets are welcome on the hike. Copper Culture SP information

The 42-acre Copper Culture State Park is on the north side of the Oconto River, on the west side of the city of Oconto. It was the site of a prehistoric cemetery of the Old Copper Complex people who occupied the northern Midwest from ca. 4000 - 2000 BC. The park is for day use only.

Candlelight Ski and Hike

Enjoy a 1-mile loop through forest and meadow with hundreds of candles lining the trail. Following the ski or hike, participants can enjoy a bonfire with refreshments in the warming shelter. Co-sponsored by the Friends of Peninsula State Park. Pets are not allowed at the event. Event will be cancelled if weather is severe. A state park vehicle admission sticker is required and can be purchased at the park headquarters or self-registration station. A trail pass is not required for this event. Enter at Highland Road, 1 mile north of Fish Creek at Hwy. 42 and County Road A. Park in Lot 5. Get Directions.

Peninsula SP information

Considered Wisconsin's most complete park, Peninsula offers 468 campsites, three group camps, a summer theater, an 18-hole golf course, sand beach, bike trails, a lighthouse and eight miles of Door County shoreline. The rollicking waves that skip towards Peninsula's sky high bluffs are part of the Niagara Escarpment.

Candlelight Ski/Hike

Location: Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit

Cross-country ski or hike in the Kettle Moraine State Forest-Northern Unit by candlelight. This year's event will take place at Zillmer Trail Area (located at W833 County Road SS, Campbellsport between County Road G and Hwy 67 near New Prospect). The trail is perfect for novice skiers with no steep hills or sharp turns.

The shelter building will be open, lit and heated. At the bonfire join fellow hikers and skiers for hot drinks and snacks provided by the Friends of the Kettle Moraine. Trail passes waived for event participants, but state park vehicle admission stickers are required.

Kettle Moraine SF - Northern Unit information

The Kettle Moraine Northern Unit is comprised of about 30,000 acres stretching 30 miles across Sheboygan, Fond du Lac and Washington Counties. The forest is managed for multiple use, including recreation management, sustainable forest products, water quality and soil protection, terrestrial and aquatic wildlife, native biological diversity and aesthetics.

Blue Mound Candlelight Ski, Hike and Snowshoe

Location: Blue Mound SP

Join us for our annual February winter candlelight ski, hike and snowshoe event sponsored by the Friends of Blue Mound State Park. Free hot chocolate, hot cider and marshmallows will be provided. A 1 or 2 mile loop for skiing will be lit with hundreds or glowing luminaries, and a 3/4 mile snowshoe or hike trail. Warm up inside the heated "Friends Shelter" or around the bonfire. Naturalist hikes will be at 6 and 7 p.m.

There is no fee for this event, but a valid park admission sticker is required. Sorry, no pets, hiking or snowshoeing are allowed on groomed ski trails. This event is weather and snow conditions permitting. Contact the park at 608-437-5711 for updated event information.

Perched atop the highest point in southern Wisconsin, Blue Mound State Park offers spectacular views and unique geological features. A swimming pool is available in during summer. Mirror Lake SP information

This park is named for its centerpiece, a lake which often is so Locationcalm that not a ripple marks its surface. The lake reflects a wooded shoreline with cliffs up to 50 feet high, a swimming beach, and wetlands that are home to a variety of wildlife. The park's 2,200 acres includes several picnic areas, wooded campsites, summer rentals, and a cabin for people with disabilities.

Black River State Forest candlelight ski and snowshoe

Join forest staff and the Black River Forest Trail Foundation for a night of skiing, snowshoeing, hiking and fun! A 1.5-mile ski trail and a 1-mile snowshoe/hiking trail will be lit with candle luminaries. Warm up around a large bonfire or in the heated shelter. Hot chocolate and hot dogs will be available for purchase.

A raffle will be held with great prizes! Meet at the Smrekar shelter located 4 miles east of Millston off County Road O. This event will still be held as a hike/snowshoe if there is not enough snow for skiing. Sponsored by the Black River Forest Trail Foundation.

28th Annual Flambeau River Candlelight Ski and Hike

Get outside this winter and enjoy lighted trails at the Flambeau River State Forest. A 1.8 kilometer loop of the Flambeau Hills Trail will be groomed, tracked and lit with more than 600 candles. The trail winds through the heart of the forest and is wide enough for diagonal striders and skate skiers. Hiking and snowshoeing are also permitted on the trail during this event. Picnic tables and a large grill will be available, with refreshments/snacks provided. There will also be large warming fires maintained throughout the night. Trail pass fees are waived during the event. This event will take place regardless of snow conditions - if there is no snow, take a candlelight walk. Photo by Jim Kuchler. Flambeau River SF information

The forest offers a variety of recreational opportunities. Canoeing is the most popular activity on the forest. Different portions of the river offer varying degrees of difficulty. The North Fork is ideal for the novice, while South Fork is for the advanced paddler. Musky, sturgeon, trout, walleye, bass and panfish can be caught from the river as well as the lakes in the forest. The forest is open to public hunting for bear, waterfowl, deer and grouse, just to name a few.

New Glarus Woods SP information

New Glarus Woods is a 435-acre state park offering camping, hiking, picnicking and snowshoeing. The park also offers direct access to The Sugar River State Trail, a 24-mile linear trail surfaced with compressed limestone screenings, for bicycling, hiking, snowmobiling and, in some areas, hunting.

Crex Meadows information

Crex Meadows Wildlife Area is a 30,000 acre property of wetlands, brush prairies, and forests scattered across a gently rolling landscape. It is located in western Burnett County. Find it from Highway 70 in Grantsburg. Directional signs will guide you through Grantsburg to the Crex Meadows Wildlife Education and Visitor Center, which is located on County Road D.

Hot chocolate and hot cider will be available. Snowshoes will also be available to borrow with a suggested donation. Parking will be in the boat landing parking lot. This park northeast of Chippewa Falls has more than 1,000 acres of forest and open prairie on a 6,300-acre man-made lake. Lake Wissota State Park offers secluded campsites, hiking, biking and horseback riding trails, picnic and playground areas, and a 285-foot swimming beach. Boating, canoeing, kayaking, and water skiing are popular summer activities on Lake Wissota.

Experience winter beauty at Newport State Park! Ski, hike or snowshoe a 1.2-mile wooded trail lit with glowing candlelight. The trail starts at the Picnic Area parking lot (Lot #3). At the end of the lit trail, participants will find the shelter building complete with an outdoor bonfire, fireplace to warm up by, and refreshments. Grills will be available for anyone who wishes to bring along the makings for a picnic supper or marshmallow roast. The event is free, but a Wisconsin State Park Vehicle Admission Sticker is required. This event will still be held as a hike/snowshoe if there is not enough snow for skiing.

Ancient lava flows, deep gorges, and spectacular waterfalls make Copper Falls one of Wisconsin's most scenic parks. Log buildings built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s add to the park's charm. There is plenty to do; hiking, bicycling, picnicking, fishing and swimming. Devil's Lake SP information

Founded in 1911, Devil's Lake is the third oldest state park in Wisconsin, the largest, and the most visited. Devil's Lake offers magnificent views from 500-foot quartzite bluffs overlooking a 360-acre lake. Hiking, pets and snowshoeing are not permitted on groomed cross-country ski trails. This event is weather dependent.

Lake Kegonsa SP information

Lake Kegonsa State Park offers a natural, peaceful setting beside a glacier-hewed lake. The lake offers swimming, fishing, water-skiing, sailing and motor boating. The lake covers 3,209 acres and is more than 30 feet deep. Park visitors enjoy the lake's excellent fishing. Prairie, forest and marsh habitats offer a variety of camping, hiking, picnicking and skiing opportunities.
