    Grading Permit Exemption Materials:

    There are no exemptions available for grading.

    However, Grading permits are not required for the construction or repair of public highways, for any agricultural use of land, or projects occurring in Milwaukee County.

    Grading permits are not needed if you are disturbing LESS than 10,000 square feet of material.

    Even if you fall into these two categories, don't forget to contact your local zoning office to determine if a permit from the city, village, town or county is needed.

    Pond projects related to the following activities DO NOT need a permit:

    • construction or repair of a public highway,
    • agricultural use,
    • located in Milwaukee county,
    • any work required to maintain original dimensions or a previously permitted pond,
    • sediment trap draining a maximum of 5 acres that meets standards in NR 151,
    • temporary stormwater pond that meets NR 151 standards.

    In most cases you can remove washed up debris, vegetation, etc. by hand without any department approvals. However, placement of any material below the ordinary high water mark OHWM) requires a permit.

    Dry boat houses located above the ordinary high water mark (OHWM) do not require any DNR approvals.

    If your "wet" boathouse meets any of the exceptions listed in statute, you must first certify your boathouse with the DNR.

    Water Ski Platforms Exemption Materials:

    To place a water ski platform without a DNR Permit you must meet ALL three of these requirements:

    1. The platform or jump does not interfere with public rights in navigable waters such as fishing access or protection of fish spawning areas.
    2. The platform or jump does not interfere with the rights of other waterfront property owners such as denying access to neighbor's shoreline.
    3. The platform or jump is located at a site that ensures adequate water depth and clearance for safe water skiing.
