Watershed - Sinissippi Lake (UR08)
Sinissippi Lake Watershed

Details

The Sinissippi Lake watershed is a large watershed, about 237 square miles, which includes the mainstem of the Rock River from the dam at Horicon downstream to the Watertown dam and all the streams which flow into the Rock in this reach. Land use is predominantly agricultural (67%). The watershed includes most of the city of Horicon, about half the City of Watertown, and the communities of Iron Ridge, Juneau, Hustisford, Clyman, Lebanon and Ixonia. Each of these communities has a municipal wastewater discharge in the watershed. The Hidden Meadows facility and seven industrial facilities discharge in the watershed. Watertown is experiencing the most significant urban growth in the watershed. Overall, there are numerous wetlands adjacent to the watershed's streams, although significant wetland drainage has occurred. Two fish on the Wisconsin Threatened and Endangered Species lists have been found in the watershed. The slender madtom (a catfish) is endangered, and the river redhorse is Threatened (Fago, 1982).

Ecological Landscapes for Sinissippi Lake Watershed

Ecological Landscapes

The Southeast Glacial Plains Ecological Landscape makes up the bulk of the non-coastal land area in southeast Wisconsin. This Ecological Landscape is made up of glacial till plains and moraines. Most of this Ecological Landscape is composed of glacial materials deposited during the Wisconsin Ice Age, but the southwest portion consists of older, pre-Wisconsin till with a more dissected topography. Soils are lime-rich tills overlain in most areas by a silt-loam loess cap. Agricultural and residential interests throughout the landscape have significantly altered the historical vegetation. Most of the rare natural communities that remain are associated with large moraines or in areas where the Niagara Escarpment occurs close to the surface. Historically, vegetation in the Southeast Glacial Plains consisted of a mix of prairie, oak forests and savanna, and maple-basswood forests. Wet-mesic prairies, southern sedge meadows, emergent marshes, and calcareous fens were found in lower portions of the Landscape. End moraines and drumlins supported savannas and forests. Agricultural and urban land use practices have drastically changed the land cover of the Southeast Glacial Plains since Euro-American settlement. The current vegetation is primarily agricultural cropland. Remaining forests occupy only about 10% of the land area and consist of maple-basswood, lowland hardwoods, and oak. No large mesic forests exist today except on the Kettle Interlobate Moraine which has topography too rugged for agriculture. Some existing forest patches that were formerly savannas have succeeded to hardwood forest due to fire suppression.

Sinissippi Lake WatershedWatershed History Note

The Villages of Hustisford and Iron Ridge are located in the Sinissippi Lake Watershed. Iron Ridge is the community in Dodge County closest to the Butler Ridge Wind Farm, a wind farm that contains 36 turbines that are 300 feet wide and 260 feet tall. It sits along the Niagara Escarpment, a ridge that originates in Ontario, Canada, runs through Wisconsin, and ends in Illinois. The Village of Hustisford was founded in 1845 by John Hustis, who built a log dam on the Rock River just south of the Tweedy Street Bridge, with a sawmill at the west end of the dam. This impoundment of the river caused it to spread across the wetland basin, forming the picturesque lake with its wooded islands now called Lake Sinissippi. The lake was originally called Cranberry Lake, and then Hustisford Mill Pond and Lake Hustisford. Later, the name was changed to Sinissippi, from an Algonquin phrase, "sinsepe," which means lake-like river. During the period 1850-1870, Lake Sinissippi was an important throughway for the state logging industry. Pine trees from forests north of Oshkosh were taken down the Wolf River to Lake Winnebago and Fond du Lac, then by railroad to the West Branch of the Rock River. The logs were off loaded into the river, then rafted through the lake and over the dam in Hustisford, to continue their journey all the way to Janesville. Ice making was also an important business from 1855 to 1945. Ice was cut on the lake south of Anthony Island and stored in one of nine icehouses in the village. Iceboats were manufactured and sold in Hustisford in the early 1900s. Ice boating was a popular sport at the time. In 1890 the Hustisford Navigation Company organized to provide steamboat service between Hustisford and Horicon. The "Rock River Lilly" held 20 passengers and furnished service to summer residents. Ferry service was also available from the Horicon Road (Highway E) to Anthony Island and from Tweedy Street to Radloff Island from 1880 to 1950. A 48-acre farm was established on Radloff Island in 1876 with complete barn, silo and granary. Later, corn and alfalfa were grown on Anthony Island. In 1908 the State Supreme Court ruled against the Rock River Valley Land Company of Illinois, which wanted to turn the Horicon Marsh into farm land by removing the Hustisford dam. This action brought an end to this lawsuit that threatened to eliminate the lake. The court declared that because Sinissippi had been a lake for more that 40 years, it had become a natural lake and could not be destroyed. This is the reason for the phrase, "Historic Lake Sinissippi."
