Watershed - Upper Crawfish River (UR06)
Upper Crawfish River Watershed

Details

This 164-square mile watershed contains the Crawfish River above the dam at Columbus and the entire North Branch of the Crawfish River. The major land use (73%) in the watershed is farming - either dairying, cash crops or feeder animals - similar to the other watersheds in the Upper Rock River Basin. The communities of Columbus, Fall River and Doylestown are also within its boundaries. Municipal wastewater dischargers in this watershed are the Village of Fall River and the Wisconsin Academy located between Columbus and Fall River. Soil erosion is a known problem in the watershed. Recent reconnaissance and monitoring of streams in the watershed revealed significant polluted runoff impacts. There has been extensive ditching in many of the upper reaches of streams and severe sedimentation problems.

Ecological Landscapes for Upper Crawfish River Watershed

Ecological Landscapes

The Upper Crawfish River is located primarily in the Southeast Glacial Plains Ecological Landscape which makes up the bulk of the non-coastal land area in southeast Wisconsin. This Ecological Landscape is made up of glacial till plains and moraines. Most of this Ecological Landscape is composed of glacial materials deposited during the Wisconsin Ice Age, but the southwest portion consists of older, pre-Wisconsin till with a more dissected topography. Soils are lime-rich tills overlain in most areas by a silt-loam loess cap. Agricultural and residential interests throughout the landscape have significantly altered the historical vegetation. Most of the rare natural communities that remain are associated with large moraines or in areas where the Niagara Escarpment occurs close to the surface. Historically, vegetation in the Southeast Glacial Plains consisted of a mix of prairie, oak forests and savanna, and maple-basswood forests. Wet-mesic prairies, southern sedge meadows, emergent marshes, and calcareous fens were found in lower portions of the Landscape. End moraines and drumlins supported savannas and forests. Agricultural and urban land use practices have drastically changed the land cover of the Southeast Glacial Plains since Euro-American settlement. The current vegetation is primarily agricultural cropland. Remaining forests occupy only about 10% of the land area and consist of maple-basswood, lowland hardwoods, and oak. No large mesic forests exist today except on the Kettle Interlobate Moraine which has topography too rugged for agriculture. Some existing forest patches that were formerly savannas have succeeded to hardwood forest due to fire suppression.

Upper Crawfish River WatershedWatershed History Note

The City of Columbus is located in the Upper Crawfish River. Columbus is known for its beautiful old houses and historic buildings. One of these buildings, the Farmers' and Merchants’ Union Bank, was designed by the architect Louis Sullivan in 1919. The Columbus bank was the last of eight small-city banks designed by Sullivan in five Midwestern states early in the twentieth century. Columbus is the smallest city in those five states with a Sullivan-designed bank and although the Columbus bank is among the smallest of Sullivan's bank buildings, it is generally considered to be one of his best. Between 1883 and 1995, Sullivan achieved national recognition along with his partner, Dankmar Adler, for their work on commercial buildings and early skyscrapers. One of their employees during this period was a young architect named Frank Lloyd Wright, who also made a name for himself in Wisconsin. The decision to build a new building for the Farmers' and Merchants' Union Bank evolved early in the twentieth century. J. Russell Wheeler, grandson of the bank's founder and bank president from 1917 to 1925, sought out Sullivan after seeing another bank on a postcard. At the time that Sullivan designed the “jewel box banks”, as they are now known, he was no longer a highly sought after architect, but his work was deeply appreciated by those who hired him. Several facets of the bank's interior reflected Wheeler's dedication to promoting agriculture. Active in the Banker-Farmer movement, initiated near the century's turn by bankers to encourage better relationships between the two professions, Wheeler believed his bank should play a leading role in stimulating agricultural development in the local area and that it should maintain a close association with the farm community that supported it. Placed along the east wall of the bank's lobby were two display cases for farm literature, locally produced products, and public notices. The agricultural connection extended into the one-story annex, behind the vaults, where a four-hundred square foot room, complete with a massive table and fireplace, was available as an assembly place for farmers and other community groups, as well as a meeting place for bank directors and stockholders. Sullivan's bank achieved placement on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972 and designation as a National Historic Landmark in 1976. The bank anchors Columbus's four-block downtown area, which also received National Register status in 1992. The historic character of the city and of the bank led to its use in the 2009 film Public Enemies as the location of a bank robbery.
