Watershed - Little Sugar River (SP14)
Little Sugar River Watershed

Details

The Little Sugar River watershed contains a number of quality streams that wind their way through the rolling hills of north central Green County and a small portion of southern Dane County. The ridges of the western portion of the watershed are more pronounced, producing spectacular pastoral scenery, but also increasing the potential impact from runoff. The area is predominantly agriculture, especially dairy, cash crop, and feeder operations. The municipal wastewater treatment plants from New Glarus and Monticello discharge to the Little Sugar River and the West Branch Little Sugar River, respectively. The population of the watershed is not predicted to grow significantly in the next two decades although there has been an increase in the number of houses springing up in the area surrounding New Glarus. This may change the land use patterns over the course of the next decade.

Ecological Landscapes for Little Sugar River Watershed

Ecological Landscapes

The Little Sugar River Watershed lies in both the Southeast Glacial Plains Ecological Landscape and the Southwest Savanna Ecological Landscape. The Southeast Glacial Plains Ecological Landscape makes up the bulk of the non-coastal land area in southeast Wisconsin. This Ecological Landscape is made up of glacial till plains and moraines. Most of this Ecological Landscape is composed of glacial materials deposited during the Wisconsin Ice Age, but the southwest portion consists of older, pre-Wisconsin till with a more dissected topography. Soils are lime-rich tills overlain in most areas by a silt-loam loess cap. Agricultural and residential interests throughout the landscape have significantly altered the historical vegetation. Most of the rare natural communities that remain are associated with large moraines or in areas where the Niagara Escarpment occurs close to the surface. Historically, vegetation in the Southeast Glacial Plains consisted of a mix of prairie, oak forests and savanna, and maple-basswood forests. Wet-mesic prairies, southern sedge meadows, emergent marshes, and calcareous fens were found in lower portions of the Landscape. End moraines and drumlins supported savannas and forests. Agricultural and urban land use practices have drastically changed the land cover of the Southeast Glacial Plains since Euro-American settlement. The current vegetation is primarily agricultural cropland. Remaining forests occupy only about 10% of the land area and consist of maple-basswood, lowland hardwoods, and oak. No large mesic forests exist today except on the Kettle Interlobate Moraine which has topography too rugged for agriculture. Some existing forest patches that were formerly savannas have succeeded to hardwood forest due to fire suppression. The Southwest Savanna Ecological Landscape is located in the far southwestern part of the state. It is characterized by deeply dissected topography, unglaciated for the last 2.4 million years, with broad open hilltops and river valleys, and steep wooded slopes. The climate is favorable for agriculture but the steep slopes limit it to the hilltops and valley bottoms. Soils are underlain with calcareous bedrock. Soils on hilltops are silty loams, sometimes of shallow depth over exposed bedrock and stony red clay subsoil. Some valley soils are alluvial sands, loams, and peats. Some hilltops are almost treeless due to the thin soil while others have a deep silt loam cap. Historic vegetation consisted of tall prairie grasses and forbs with oak savannas and some wooded slopes of oak. Almost three-quarters of the current vegetation is agricultural crops with lesser amounts of grasslands, barrens, and urban areas. The major forest types are oak-hickory and maple-basswood. High-quality prairie remnants occur on rocky hilltops and slopes that are not farmed. Some prairie pastures and oak savannas still exist. The grassland areas harbor many rare grassland birds, invertebrates, and other grassland species. Relict stands of pine occur on bedrock outcroppings along some stream systems.

Recreational Opportunities

The Sugar River State Bicycle Trail, which follows an abandoned railroad bed between New Glarus and Brodhead, parallels the Little Sugar River and the Sugar River. There are two major public lands in the watershed. The Albany State Wildlife Area covers over 1900 acres and contains wetland complexes, bottomland hardwoods and grasslands. It is home to a variety of songbirds and wildlife species. Recreation includes canoeing and fishing, with access available from 3 boat launches. The New Glarus Woods State Park is adjacent to the bike trail and includes nature and hiking trails. It has 31 campsites including 14 primitive sites for bicyclists.

Impaired Water in Little Sugar River Watershed

Lakes and Impoundments

Lake Montesian is a small man-made lake that lies entirely in a park on the west side of Monticello. The 7-acre lake is fed by springs and an artesian well. An overflow runs to the West Branch Little Sugar River. The lake was chemically treated with rotenone in 1974 to remove stunted panfish and was subsequently restocked with largemouth bass. It was dredged in 1997. In fall of 2001, the lake was drained in order to repair the dam and water control structure. The lake is scheduled to be refilled and restocked with fish in late, 2002.

Little Sugar River WatershedWatershed History Note

The City of New Glarus, in the Little Sugar River Watershed, traces its roots back to Switzerland. In the early 1840s, after several years of failed crops and as food became scarce, much of Glarus, Switzerland found itself plunged deep into poverty. Having more workers than available jobs, the government of Glarus saw emigration to America as a possible solution. Given the desperate economic conditions in Switzerland, 193 volunteers decided to leave their homeland to start anew in America. In 1845, magistrates in Glarus, Switzerland dispatched two men, Nicolas Duerst and Fridolin Streiff, to find a suitable location for a colony in the New World. They were given $2600 and instructions to purchase land, build new cabins, and prepare for the settlers to arrive the following spring. Duerst and Streiff began their search in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois before reaching St. Louis, Missouri. In the early days of July 1845 they traveled north to Galena, Illinois, after which they arrived at the land office in Mineral Point, Wisconsin. The men investigated several tracts of farm and timber land in the southern Wisconsin territory before deciding on two square miles along the Little Sugar River. On July 17, 1845 the men purchased 1,280 acres for $1.25 per acre. It was a fertile basin bounded with hills and a large stand of trees nearby. Some said later it wasn't the best property available, but the valley and hilltops reminded them of their native Switzerland. Following the end of the Civil War, and with the evolution of the cheese factory, the prosperity of New Glarus and neighboring communities grew. At its peak in 1905, New Glarus boasted 22 cheese factories, so many it was said the crossroads of the town were congested with daily deliveries of milk to the Limburger and Swiss cheese factories. New Glarus quickly became known as the "Cheese Capital of the World". Today New Glarus is known as Little Switzerland and continues to celebrate its Swiss heritage with annual plays, festivals and Swiss cuisine.
