Watershed - Lower Lemonweir River (LW27)
Lower Lemonweir River Watershed

Details

The Lower Lemonweir River Watershed is located in the driftless region of Wisconsin in Juneau County. All the creeks and ditches drain to the Lemonweir River, which then flows into the Wisconsin River. Many of the creeks in the watershed consist of sand and silt substrates, with low gradients and small to moderately sized attached spring ponds. Forest covers the largest percent of land in the watershed, although agriculture also covers a high percent of land. Wetlands account for just over 13% of the watershed, a percent that is higher than most of the watersheds in the Lower Wisconsin Basin. This high number of wetlands could explain why the Lower Lemonweir River Watershed is the second largest producer of cranberries in the Basin.

Date  2002

Population, Land Use

Population in the watershed for the year 2000 was estimated to be close to 9,874. Overall, population growth in the watershed is low.

Date  2002

Nonpoint and Point Sources

Overall, nonpoint source pollution from both urban and rural sources is considered the primary cause of water quality problems in streams in the Lower Lemonweir River watershed. The groundwater in the Lower Lemonweir River Watershed has been ranked as a high priority with respect to nonpoint source pollution reduction. The cause of groundwater contamination from nonpoint sources of pollution may result from over fertilizing and over spreading of manure on agriculture fields. In fact, there are a couple of areas in the watershed that are considered to be atrazine prohibition zones. These areas indicated that elevated levels of atrazine, an herbicide used on corn, has been found in some tested private water wells. Soils are permeable which has allowed atrazine to reach the groundwater in some locations. Some work is being done in this watershed to help clean up the surface and groundwater in this watershed. Nonpoint actives are currently being done on Little Onemile Creek, Onemile Creek and unnamed tributaries to Onemile Creek. Students at Mauston High School, with cooperation from the wildlife management classes and the DNR, are conducting in-stream trout habitat work on Onemile Creek. There are two permitted municipal discharges in the Lower Lemonweir River watershed Mauston and New Lisbon. The municipality of Mauston discharges their wastewater treatment plant to the Lemonweir River while New Lisbon discharges to a tributary flowing to the Lemonweir River.

Date  2002

Ecological Landscapes for Lower Lemonweir River Watershed

Ecological Landscapes

The Lower Lemonweir River Watershed is primarily located in the Central Sand Plains Ecological Landscape which is located in central Wisconsin, occurs on a flat, sandy lake plain, and supports agriculture, forestry, recreation, and wildlife management. The Ecological Landscape formed in and around what was once Glacial Lake Wisconsin, which contained glacial meltwater extending over 1.1 million acres at its highest stage. Soils are primarily sandy lake deposits, some with silt-loam loess caps. Sandstone buttes carved by rapid drainage of the glacial lake, or by wave action when they existed as islands in the lake, are distinctive features of this landscape. The historic vegetation of the area included extensive wetlands of many types, including open bogs, shrub swamps, and sedge meadows. Prairies, oak forests, savannas and barrens also occurred in the Ecological Landscape. An area of more mesic forest with white pine and hemlock was found in the northwest portion, including a significant pinery in eastern Jackson County. Today, nearly half of the Ecological Landscape is nonforested, in agriculture and grassland. Most of the historic wetlands were drained early in the 1900s and are now used for vegetable cropping. The forested portion is mostly oak-dominated forest, followed by aspen and pines. A minor portion is maple-basswood forest and lowland hardwoods. The Lower Lemonweir River Watershed has a variety of good quality habitats and rare plant communities that are listed on the state's Natural Heritage Inventory, (NHI), kept by the Bureau of Endangered Resources. These communities include: dry cliff, dry prairie, dry-mesic prairie, hemlock relict, southern dry forest, southern dry-mesic forest, alder thicket, moist cliff, floodplain forest, northern dry-mesic forest, northern mesic forest, oak barrens, pine barrens, pine relict, northern sedge meadow, northern wet forest, shrub-carr, springs and spring runs, soft, and slow, hard, warm stream.

Date  2002

Recreational Opportunities

The Lower Lemonweir River Watershed contains a wide variety of activities to suit any recreational need. The Wisconsin River follows along the eastern edge of the watershed. This stretch of the river is a maze of braided channels, islands and bluffs. The diverse fisheries in the tributaries to the Wisconsin River offers game fishing to suit any angler. Public easements throughout the watershed allow access to Class I and II trout streams.

Date  2002

Wildlife and Habitat

The watershed is also home for a variety of rare plant and animal species including; 1 species of beetle, 2 species of birds, 4 species of dragonflies, 1 species of fish, 1 species of lizard, 1 species of mussel, and 14 plant species. These plants and animals are also listed on the state's Natural Heritage Inventory.

Lower Lemonweir River WatershedWatershed History Note

The Village of New Lisbon is located in the Lower Lemonweir River Watershed. The most important event in New Lisbon's early history was the arrival of the railroad in 1857. New Lisbon became the headquarters for railroad workers who needed a good night's rest. In a few short years the village had roughly four hundred residents and no less than eight hotels. The railroad, together with the sawmills and grain mills on the Lemonweir River, triggered a boom that brought an estimated 2,500 people to the New Lisbon area. Shops and stores, many of them housed in impressive two-story brick buildings lined Bridge and Water Streets. Merchants and other citizens were so confident of New Lisbon's future and so aware of the railroad's importance that they built a half-mile long board sidewalk from the business district to the depot by means of public subscription rather than taxes. Although a railroad town, New Lisbon was also the home port of Juneau County's only steamboat line. The thirty-six foot "White Queen" carried passengers and freight and made special excursions up river to Wigwam Point, Hog Island and the Buckley Bridge. The boat operated daily when the season permitted. The shallow-draft steamer was built only nine-feet wide so it could negotiate the curves and bends of the narrow Lemonweir River. In the early 1900s, New Lisbon became home to one of Juneau County's most unusual businesses, the pearl button factory of Wallace McNeeley. He had learned his trade at Muscatine, Iowa, the pearl button capital of the Mississippi Valley, and found ample stock for his trade in the streams and river of Juneau and Sauk counties. In 1938 a new dam was erected across the Lemonweir River at New Lisbon. It maintained and enlarged the old millpond to give the city a recreational area.
