Watershed - Pike River (GB14)
Pike River Watershed

Details

The Pike River Watershed is located in Forest, Florence and Marinette counties. It covers 182,233 acres and includes 330 miles of streams and rivers, 1,478 acres of lakes and 33,494 acres of wetlands. It is primarily composed of forests (71%) and wetlands (18%) and is ranked for nonpoint source issues.

Ecological Landscapes for Pike River Watershed

Ecological Landscapes

The Pike River Watershed is located primarily in the Northeast Sands Ecological Landscape which occupies a relatively narrow, vertical band of land in northeast Wisconsin. This landscape formed in glacial outwash sand plains (some of them pitted), and has steep outcropping Precambrian bedrock knolls of basalt, rhyolite, or granite. Sandy ground moraines and end moraines are also interspersed in the landscape. Historically, extensive oak/jack pine barrens and jack pine forests were found in the outwash sand portions of this Ecological Landscape. Moraines supported forests of hardwoods, red pine, and white pine. Outwash plains often contained pitted depressions, resulting in numerous wetlands and kettle lakes. Most of this Ecological Landscape is still forested; aspen predominates, followed by northern hardwoods. Jack pine remains on the outwash plains along with northern pin oak. There are several important occurrences of jack pine/oak barren communities. A small percentage of this Ecological Landscape contains spruce-fir-cedar forest and lowland hardwood forest. The Brazeau Swamp is one of the best representations of large cedar swamp forests in northern Wisconsin.

Impaired Water in Pike River Watershed

Aquatic Invasive Species

A recent invader in the Great Lakes, zebra mussels, have spread into the waters of Green Bay and have moved into inland waters. Zebra mussels pose a threat to water intake systems, which become clogged with the mussels, and have been known to impact recreational activities such as boating and fishing. The mussel has qulckly spread since the first adult mussels were discovered in Lake Michigan in 1990. A mature mussel can produce 30,000 to 40,000 eggs per season and the mussels can survive out of water as long as 30 days, leading to the potential for further introduction into inland waters as boats are moved from waterbody to waterbody.

Beecher Lake Protection & Rehab District: Beecher Lake Ewm Control Project: The Beecher Lake District (the District) proposes to selectively control Eurasian water-milfoil (EWM) through chemical treatment, winter drawdowns, and preventative measures in Beecher Lake and Upper Lake during the period 2010 - 2013. The project elements and deliverables are specified in the District\2019s Aquatic Invasive Species Control Grant Application, dated August, 2009. The project includes conducting annual pre and post-treatment surveys to monitor the extent of EWM and efficacy of treatments, treating EWM infested areas with aquatic herbicides, creating GIS maps of the treated areas to guide future applications, and conducting winter drawdowns to examine the effectiveness of such actions as a control measure. Additional activities under the project include a survey of Beecher Lake for evidence of the native milfoil weevil and if present, its potential as a biological control agent will be evaluated. The District will also continue education and prevention activities to prevent further AIS infestations, participation in the Citizen Lake Monitoring Network (CLMN) AIS monitoring, and conducting watercraft inspections. Watercraft inspection records will be entered into the State\2019s online Watercraft Inspection Database and CLMN AIS data will be entered into the Surface Water Integrated Management System. Annual progress reports and a final report summarizing the four-year project will be provided to DNR.

If a consultant is to provide the final report, it is recommended that the Grantee provide the DNR Aquatic Invasive Species Coordinator with a draft for comment on the report\2019s adequacy prior to making final payment to the consultant. DNR will be provided with both paper and electronic PDF copies of the final report along with, or prior to, submission of grantee\2019s final payment request.

Pike River WatershedWatershed History Note

The Pike River watershed was home to the Goodman Lumber Company, the first privately owned forest company in Wisconsin to adopt “Sustained Yield.” In 1927, R.B. Goodman, secretary of the Goodman Lumber Company, decided to implement sustained yield by managing the lands for permanent timber production, through selective cutting and abandonment of clear cutting. In 1932, the company’s holdings consisted of 60,000 acres of timberland and about 20,000 acres of cutover land. The company used spurs from its main logging railroad to log selected tracts of timber. It cut only mature trees or those showing signs of decay and injury. After completing its operations, the company pulled up the spur track to use elsewhere and the right of way became a fire lane. In ten years, the tract was ready for a second cutting. In 1934, the management strategy received high praise from James W. Girard of the U.S. Forest Service who declared it the finest forest practice he had seen anywhere. In 1955, the logging operation was sold with the stipulation that the new owners continue the sustained yield model for 20 to 30 years under the provisions of the Forest Crop Law. The eighth cutting cycle on the original Goodman Lumber Company land took place in 1999, yet the tract still contained the same volume of timber that it had in 1927, even though 417 million board feet of timber had been removed between 1927 and 1999. R.B. Goodman was inducted into the Wisconsin Forestry Hall of Fame in 1984 for his role as a leader in forest tax reform, rural zoning, and industrial forestry.
