Niebauer Springs, in the Lower South Fork Flambeau River Watershed, is a 11.72 acre springs-lake that falls in Price County. This springs-lake is managed for fishing and swimming and is currently not considered impaired.

This soft water drainage lake has a tin-whistle type water control structure on the outlet. Its estimated outlet flow is 3.0 ft(3)/sec to the Flambeau River South Fork. The springs has two tributary streams which provide the water to the pond. It has a game fish population of brook trout which is planted annually, as well as black bullheads and forage minnows. The springs has a shoreline of 60% upland hardwood, 20% tag alder swamp and 20% tamarack bog. The littoral bottom is made up of sand, gravel, muck and detritus. Emergent, submergent and floating aquatic vegetation are present and scattered throughout the pond. Wildlife values are limited to muskrats and a few nesting ducks. There is no private development, as the State of Wisconsin owns the entire shoreline and provides the only. public access to the springs.

Waters that do not meet water quality standards are considered impaired and restoration actions are planned and carried out until the water is once again fishable and swimmable

Monitoring the condition of a river, stream, or lake includes gathering physical, chemical, biological, and habitat data. Comprehensive studies often gather all these parameters in great detail, while lighter assessment events will involve sampling physical, chemical and biological data such as macroinvertebrates. Aquatic macroinvertebrates and fish communities integrate watershed or catchment condition, providing great insight into overall ecosystem health. Chemical and habitat parameters tell researchers more about human induced problems including contaminated runoff, point source dischargers, or habitat issues that foster or limit the potential of aquatic communities to thrive in a given area. Niebauer Springs is located in the Lower South Fork Flambeau River watershed which is 200.15 mi². Land use in the watershed is primarily forest (46%), wetland (43%) and a mix of grassland (4%) and other uses (7%). This watershed has 187.09 stream miles, 607.14 lake acres and 42,848.94 wetland acres.
