Impaired Waters (303(d)) Evaluation of Nemadji River watershed and Bluff and Bear Creeks in the Lake Superior Basin, Douglas County, Wisconsin - NOR_19_10

Purpose

This project will evaluate Lake Superior Basin streams located in Douglas County for inclusion on the states 303(d) list. Professional judgement and past monitoring indicate possible impairments. The streams included in this proposal are the Nemadji River (WBIC 2835300) and following tributaries to the Nemadji: Balsam Creek (WBIC 2841400), Black River (3836900); Mud Creek (WBIC 2843000) and Clear Creek (WBIC 2842800). Also included are Bluff Creek (WBIC-2833200) and two unnamed tributaries (WBIC’s-2833900, 2833500) and Bear Creek (WBIC-2834600) and one unnamed tributary to Bear Creek (WBIC-2834800). Fish, habitat, macroinvertebrates and chemistry samples will be collected using baseline monitoring protocols for up to a total of 14 sites.

Objective

The objective of this project is to assess the quality of above mentioned streams to see if they should be designated impaired and listed on the states 303(d) list.

Outcome

1) Samples sites: 14 sites for water chemistry samples, up to 14 sites for macroinvertebrates (depending on if wadeable or habitat available),12-13 sites for fish IBI and habitat sampling. Nemadji River - 3 sites; Tributaries – Balsam Creek - 1 site, Black River - 1 site, Mud Creek – 1 site, and Clear Creek – 1 site. Bluff Creek and unnamed tributaries will have ~4-5 sites, and Bear Creek and one unnamed tributary will have 2-3 sites for 7 sites total in the Bluff/Bear Creek systems. 2) Sampling events: Water chemistry sampling on the Nemadji River and its tributaries will occur monthly and/or during high water events for up to a total of 10 sampling events from April through October. Water chemistry sampling on Bluff/Bear Creeks and their tributaries will only occur one time, during the summer. Fish and habitat sampling will occur during the summer months on ~12-13 stations (one or two are unwadeable) and macroinvertebrates will be sampled in the fall/winter. 3) Sample collection will be complete by mid winter 4) Data will be entered into database by spring 2010 (macroinvertebrate data will depend on Stevens Point lab) 5) Final report will be complete after macorinvertebrate samples are done. Report no later than end of August 2010.
