Upper Fox/Wolf Basin TMDL Monitoring NER_02_11

Purpose

This is the third year of monitoring for the Upper Fox Basin and the first year of monitoring for the Wolf River Basin. NER biologists and CO SWAT will collect water samples from the Upper Fox Basin waterbodies of Fox River, Puchyan River, Fond du Lac River, Montello River, Waukau Creek, the Wolf Basin waterbodies of the Wolf River, Little Wolf River, Embarrass River, Waupaca River, and lakes Poygan, Winneconne, Butte des Morts, and Winnebago to be analyzed for TSS, Total Phosphorus, and Dissolved Phosphorus that will be used in modeling the sediment and phosphorus loads to Lake Winnebago. Also in collaboration with the USGS, sediment core samples will be collected from Lake Winnebago, Lake Poygan, Lake Winneconne, and Lake Butte des Morts to be used for the quantification of the existing internal nutrient load within the system. Results of the modeling will be used in developing a TMDL for Lake Winnebago to drive management practices in the Upper Fox Basin.

Objective

The development of a TMDL to address the phosphorus and sediment loading to Lake Winnebago is necessary because 50% of the nutrient and sediment load to the Lower Fox River is directly from Lake Winnebago. In order for the Lower Fox TMDL (currently in development) to meet its goals, reducing the pollutant load from Lake Winnebago is critical. The Objective of this project is to address phosphorus and sediment loading from the Upper Fox River Basin and Wolf River Basin to Lake Winnebago, and therefore support the work of the Lower Fox River Basin TMDL. This will be the 3rd of 3 years of data needed from the Upper Fox Basin sites, and the 1st of 3 years of monitoring in the Wolf River Basin to accurately model the sediment and phosphorus loading to Lake Winnebago.

Outcome

Performance Measures: These are milestones that will be reported on in the Division Quarterly Report. Please estimate dates in a manner that encourages success. 1) 15 sample sites 2) 30 sampling events 3) Sample collection will run throughout the entire fiscal year, 06/30/2011. 4) All data loading is automated so it goes to the appropriate database immediately after analysis results are posted, 06/30/2011. 5) The final TMDL report will be completed after all of the monitoring data is collected and pollutant loads are estimated. Completion of the final TMDL report for this project is estimated to be September 2014.

Monitor Targeted Area
Collect surface water samples throughout the Upper Fox River and Wolf River basins to be analyzed for total suspended solids, total phosphorus, and total dissolved phosphorus. Collect sediment cores from the lakes to be used to estimate the internal phosphorus load.
