Mussel Monitoring Program of Wisconsin
Mapleleaf shell collected by a volunteer.
Over half of Wisconsin's 51 native mussel species (also known as clams) are listed as species of greatest conservation need or we need information on where they currently occur. Threats like dams, siltation, and the presence of invasives like zebra mussels pose major challenges to the existence of our native mussels. To participate in this program, simply collect mussel shells or take photos of live mussels, note their location, and bring them to your nearest DNR service center or send photos to Lisie Kitchel. Get Involved (exit DNR).
