Trapping regulations

A summary of Wisconsin's trapping laws and how they affect you are contained in the pamphlets listed below.

CORRECTION: A document previously posted to the Wisconsin DNR website incorrectly listed the measurements for a colony trap in Wisconsin.

The CORRECT wording of the colony trap measurements is as follows:

Overall length can not exceed 36 inches and height and width cannot exceed 6 inches (outside measurement). If using a round trap, the diameter cannot exceed 6 inches. (Traps can be round, square or rectangular).

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and would urge anyone with further questions to contact your local conservation officer or our furbearer program, John Olson at 715-685-2934.

CORRECTION: Two errors were found in the print version of the 2013 Trapping Regulations. The CORRECT information is as follows

  • The otter season in the North zone runs from Nov. 2, 2013 - Apr. 30, 2014.
  • Lands enrolled in the Managed Forest Law (MFL) and Forest Crop Law (FCL) programs are NOT open to trapping unless the trapper has the permission of the landowner to trap on these lands.
