LocationThe Wiouwash State Trail is named for Winnebago, Outagamie, Waupaca and Shawano counties. This trail, built on a former rail corridor, is maintained and operated by the four counties the trail traverses. Two sections of the trail are now complete and are separated by a gap of about 30 miles.

In Shawano County, the northern segment of the trail travels 19 miles between Birnamwood and Split Rock. This segment of the trail connects with the Mountain-Bay State Trail in Eland. The southern segment of the trail is open for 22 miles from Hortonville to the city of Oshkosh. The southern segment skirts along the edge of Lake Butte des Morts and continues into the countryside through native tall grass prairies, farmlands and wildlife areas. This segment connects to the Friendship Trail at State Highway 10. The Friendship Trail travels between the Wiouwash State Trail and the city of Menasha.

Several gaps remain along the rail corridor before the two segments are connected by a continuous trail. Ongoing efforts are being made to acquire right-of-way or obtain the necessary easements to complete the trail. Once completed, the trail may eventually run from the town of Aniwa in Shawano County to downtown Oshkosh.

Trail activities

The trail may bring a number of different users to the trail at the same time. It is important to use good trail etiquette to ensure the enjoyment and safety of all trail users.

Hiking Bicycling Pets Walking and bicycling

The level grade and limestone surface make this trail suitable for bicyclists, walkers and joggers. Bikers do not need a trail pass while using the trail. Due to the possibility of hoof marks in the trail surface, wider-tire bicycles are recommended.

Pet owners, please be sure to have your pet on a leash, 8 feet or shorter, at all times. You must pick up after your pet.

Horseback riding Horseback riding

The two segments of the Wiouwash State Trail corridor are open for horses. Riders are asked to limit their use of the trail immediately following a heavy rainfall to reduce the amount of damage to the trail. Riders must pick up after their horse.

Snowmobiling Winter activities Winter activities

Snowmobiles are permitted on the trail. Operators must follow all Wisconsin snowmobile laws. The trail also connects to numerous miles of county snowmobile trails.

The trail is open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, however, the trail is not groomed, and skiers and snowshoers must share the trail with snowmobiles. Skiers do not need a trail pass while using the trail.

No Hunting No Hunting No Hunting and trapping allowed on trail

Hunting and trapping are not allowed on the trail corridor. For more information, please see:
