Wisconsin State Park System Eisenbahn State Trail
DNR Photo
This 25-mile, county-operated trail extends from the historic city of West Bend into the scenic countryside of eastern Wisconsin past the glacial landscape of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. Built on a former railroad corridor, the history of the trail is remembered in the title "Eisenbahn," a German word for railroad.
The trail passes through the communities of West Bend, Kewaskum and Campbellsport, ending in Eden at the village park. Washington and Fond du Lac counties maintain and manage the Eisenbahn State Trail.
The Northern Unit of the Kettle Moraine State Forest provides many additional recreation opportunities. Camping, hiking, hunting and fishing, mountain biking, horseback riding, snowmobiling and cross-country ski trails can all be found within the 30,000-acre forest.
Trail activities
The trail may bring a number of different users to the trail at the same time. It is important to use good trail etiquette to ensure the enjoyment and safety of all trail users.
Walking, bicycling and in-line skating
The fairly level grade and smooth limestone and asphalt surfaces make this 25-mile trail suitable for bicyclists, walkers and joggers. The five-mile section in West Bend has been paved with asphalt suitable for in-line skating.
Pet owners, please be sure to have your pet on a leash, 8 feet or shorter, at all times. You must pick up after your pet.
Ice Age National Scenic Trail
The Ice Age Trail winds through the Kettle Moraine State Forest and crosses the Eisenbahn State Trail just south of Kewaskum near County Highway H.
Winter activities
In Washington County, snowmobiles are permitted on the trail for about seven miles from Lighthouse Lane to the Washington/Fond du Lac county line. Snowmobiles are not permitted in West Bend. In Fond du Lac County, snowmobiles are permitted on the entire 12 miles of trail from the county line to Eden. To protect the trail from damage, the trail is closed to snowmobiling when snow conditions are poor. Operators must follow all Wisconsin snowmobile laws.
The Eisenbahn State Trail is open to winter ATV use between December 15 and March 15 when the ground is frozen and the temperature is 28 degrees Fahrenheit (F) or lower. Winter ATV riding is allowed on the trail in Fond du Lac County only.
In Washington County, the section south of Lighthouse Lane is open in winter for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing as long as conditions permit. In Fond du Lac County, the trail is open to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, however, the trail is not groomed, and skiers and snowshoers must share the trail with snowmobiles.
No Hunting and trapping allowed on trail
Hunting and trapping are not allowed on the trail corridor. For more information, please see:
