Havenwoods State ForestSchool field trips

With 237 acres of grasslands, wetlands and woods right in the city of Milwaukee, Havenwoods is a wonderful place to explore nature in the city.

How to register

For school year programs, call to be placed on our mailing list. Registration materials are sent in November for the following spring and in March for the following fall. Register for summer programs by phone beginning in March.

Programs

Havenwoods offers the following naturalist-guided programs correlated to Wisconsin Model Academic Standards.

Wildlife programs

Animal homes

Songs, stories, surprises, role-playing and exploration help us to discover animal homes and the special things animals need to survive. (Grades K - 1).

Way of the wild

As detectives in search of clues, the children will investigate the homes, feeding signs, tracks and other signs of Havenwoods' wildlife. (Grades 2 - 3).

Wild neighbors

Through role-playing, explorations, detective boxes and live animals, we'll look at the relationship of people and our wild animal neighbors in the city. (Grades 4 - 6).

Insect programs

Legs!

1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 14, 33, 124! How many legs do creatures have? We'll catch insects and their relatives and enjoy these amazing creatures! (Grades K - 1).

Creature feature!

We will use collecting equipment and magnifying lenses to investigate the fascinating world of insects and many other small creatures. (Grades 2 - 3).

Insect safari

Through exploration, riddles and activities, the children will discover the characteristics and adaptations of insects and their relatives. (Grades 4 - 6).

Plant programs

The good green Earth

We will explore Havenwoods to discover the importance of plants in our world. (Grade K).

Green and growing

Students will take a fresh look at the interdependence of plants and animals through a hike, exploration and other activities. (Grades 1 - 3).

Garden harvest

We will discover what plants need to survive, what parts are edible, how nature recycles nutrients and how people celebrate the harvest. (Grades 2 - 3).

We need each other

We'll take an exploration hike to discover how trees, people and animals are connected. (Grades 4 - 6).

Other programs

Sense of wonder

Armed with magnifying lenses and very alert senses, children will feel, smell, observe and listen their way around Havenwoods' open spaces and woods. (Grades K -1).
