Big Bay State Park Current conditions

Getting to the park

Big Bay State Park is located on Madeline Island, about seven miles from the ferry landing at the town of La Pointe. Access to the island and the park is by way of the Madeline Island Ferry [exit DNR].

There is no public transportation or taxi service on the island. Access to park roads and parking areas during winter are weather dependent. As a reminder, an annual sticker or daily pass is required for all vehicles at the park.

Trails

Beautiful rock formations along the park's sandstone cliffs on Lake Superior are best viewed along the Point Trail which can be accessed a few hundred yards east of the main park entrance.

It is advised that all visitors keep safety in mind when visiting the park by following designated trails and park rules. Pets are allowed on most trails (except the beach or boardwalk trail) and must be on a leash 8 feet or shorter at all times. Bicycles are permitted only on roads and in parking areas.

Camping

Don't move firewood!

Don't move firewood!Due to the potential of carrying harmful tree pests and diseases, Wisconsin has restrictions for moving firewood.

The family and group camps and the water and shower facilities are open for the season.
