Rush Point Unit

Green Bay West Shores Wildlife Area

GBWS Rush Point
Rush Point Unit is slightly over 1,000 acres of which the state of Wisconsin owns 226 acres. Rush Point Unit is located along County Highway Y north of Oconto. It has a variety of habitat types grading from coastal marsh along the shore of Green Bay to mature swamp hardwoods. Lowland brush communities occur throughout the area along with scattered stands of aspen.

The Rush Point Unit is located on the south end of the 10,000-acre County Line Swamp. It is part of an Important Bird Area [exit DNR] due to its use by both breeding and migrating birds. Numerous wetlands and watercourses within the Rush Point Unit contribute to the health of the Green Bay ecosystem.

Management objective

The Rush Point Unit was established in 1962. Some of the land within the unit was historically farmed but high-water tables and poor soil makes this use of the land marginal. Acquisition is continuing as land and resources are available.

Today, forest management through timber sales is conducted on the unit. Control of invasive species in the wetlands is a continuing activity in this and other units of the Green Bay West Shore Wildlife Area.
