New Look, Same Reliable Information. The Trout Regulations & Opportunities User Tool (TROUT) was recently revised to take advantage of improved mapping technology.

You might notice a new look, but all the information is still there and waiting to make your trout fishing easier.

The Trout Regulations & Opportunities User Tool (TROUT) was designed to help trout anglers find places to fish. TROUT includes trout fishing regulations, classified trout water, public land and DNR fishing easements. 

Wisconsin boasts over 13,000 miles of trout streams; deciding on just one fishing place can be daunting. TROUT will help anglers optimize their time on the water by showing where the publicly accessible land is relative to roads, bridge crossings and trout streams. Exploring trout water just got easier!

This tool provides anglers with the following:

  • On-the-go mobile access to trout streams and regulations
  • Roads, aerial images and fishing easements
  • The ability to find your location, measure distances and print/save a customized map for a fishing trip
  • Trout habitat project locations and details from 2011 through 2016

Map Application Features

FISHING REGULATIONS

  • Interactive Trout Regulations - Click a colored section of the stream or lake to see the specific regulations for that water section. If a stream is not colored green, yellow or red, it has the county-wide base regulation. You can turn on the county trout regulations layer and click any county to see that county's base regulation. Visit the regulations page for more information.

FISHING ACCESS

  • Public Lands and Easements - Turn on layers for DNR-managed land and non-DNR easements to view publicly accessible lands where fishing may be allowed. Click on a property to view the permitted activities and link to the property's webpage for more information.
  • Parking Lots - View DNR-owned parking lots. 

FISHING OPPORTUNITIES

  • Interactive Habitat Projects (2011-2016) - Click on a purple dot or line to see the specific habitat project details.
  • Trout Class Layer – The trout class layer provides insight into the type of fishery by identifying trout stream classifications.

TROUT Tips

Information Pop-Up Windows - You can click specific map features you have turned on to learn more about a location, like its regulations or trout classification. After you click, a pop-up window containing the information will appear. In many cases, there will be multiple pages to review. You can identify if multiple pages are available if there are scroll buttons and reference to 1 of X in the menu bar of the pop-up window (see below). Note: The menu bar may be at the top or bottom of the pop-up window.

Find My Location Icon - This lets you find your current location on the map. The icon is located in the lower right corner of the map.

Why is the map not available?
The web map server might be down temporarily. Please try again in a few minutes. 

Are managed forest lands available on this map?
No, private forest lands open to public recreation through Managed Forest Law and Forest Crop Law programs are unavailable on this map. See Private Forest Lands Open to Public Recreation Web mapping application. Easements held by county and private conservation organizations are also not available.

Are private lands available on this map?
No, they are not available on this map. This web map contains lands that are, for the most part, open to the public. For more information, see plat books and land ownership maps or your county office.

How do I see additional detail?
You can zoom in or out using the mouse's scroll wheel. Users can also use the "Zoom In" or "Zoom Out" buttons on the left side of the map.

How do I find out the regulations for a specific site?
Zoom into the specific site on which you want information, click on the site and a pop-up window will appear. If the trout regulations layer is on, and you've clicked on a green, yellow or red stream, information describing the bag limit and season will be included. If the Trout County Regulations layer is turned on, the county and county regulations information will be included.
