Wisconsin's hatcheries in need of some help...

Wisconsin has a fish propagation system admired by many, but critical investments must be made to meet future stocking needs, according to a comprehensive study of Wisconsin’s hatchery system by HDR Engineering Inc. of Springfield, Ill.

Doing nothing will result in major shortfalls in fish needed for stocking statewide and will affect businesses benefiting from the $2.75 billion in economic impact that fishing generates in Wisconsin, the 30,000 jobs it supports and the $196 million in local and state tax revenues it provides.

Where DNR raises and stocks fish

Wisconsin fish hatcheries last year produced more than 7.6 million fingerling-sized and larger fish for stocking statewide [exit DNR] to provide fishing opportunities in waters with no or little natural reproduction, in urban waters and at kids' fishing events.
