Help us improve water quality in the Milwaukee Basin

Background information

Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District has developed total maximum daily load calculations, known as TMDLs, for the Menomonee River, Kinnickinnic River, Milwaukee River Watersheds and the Milwaukee Harbor Estuary. Development of the calculations is required for impaired waterways under the federal Clean Water Act as part of efforts to meet applicable water quality standards.

The Milwaukee sewerage district initiated the TMDL project as a third party on behalf of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources using a contract consulting team to assist with the modeling and calculations. Development of the project has been a multi-year process building on previous watershed work conducted in the basin. The pollutants addressed in the calculations are fecal coliform bacteria, phosphorous and sediment.

Additional background material, meeting notes and presentations from earlier stakeholder meetings organized by the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District can be obtained by contacting Bill Krill at BKrill@mmsd.com
