Locations of Industrial Sand Mines and Processing Plants in Wisconsin

Industrial sand for use in the petroleum, glass and foundry industries has been produced in Wisconsin for over 40 years. The demand for sand increased exponentially starting in 2014, related to use of Wisconsin sand as a proppant in the extraction of oil and gas. Wisconsin has mining, processing and transportation facilities associated with industrial sand. Some facilities have a combination of these activities.

The Air Management Data Viewer (AMDV) is the DNR's web-based mapping application that provides information about air permitted facilities, facility emissions and air quality monitoring sites in Wisconsin. It also displays information about active industrial sand mines and processing plants in Wisconsin.

To view industrial sand locations and permit and compliance information, open the viewer and take the following steps.

Step 1: Launch the AMDV application.
Step 2: Click "I want to..."
Step 3: In the drop-down menu, select "Change visible map layers"
Step 4: De-select the facilities layer
Step 5: Select the Industrial Sand Facilities Layer

Step 6: After following steps 1-5, all industrial sand locations located in Wisconsin will display on the map. For information on a specific site, right click on the site icon and select "Find data on the map." Facility information along with a link to permit tracking information is displayed on the left-hand side of the screen. You can also open the toolbar using the icon in the right-hand corner and select the "Identify" tool to see more information about a facility.
