Wisconsin State Natural Areas Program Koshkonong Corners (No. 668)

Eastern prairie fringed orchid

Overview

Location

Rock County. T4N-R13E, Section 3. 62 acres.

Description

Description

Koshkonong Corners supports a diversity of natural communities including oak savanna, southern sedge meadow, wet-mesic prairie, and southern hardwood swamp - all contiguous with the Lake Koshkonong floodplain. Of note, is a significant population of eastern prairie fringed orchid, a federally threatened and state endangered species. Most of this site has been undergoing management for the benefit of the orchid and habitat. Much of the initial management and restoration has focused on removal of invasive woody species such as buckthorn and multi-flora rose. About five acres was once farmed wetland that has now been left to return to wet-mesic prairie. Species present include bog tway blade, monkey flower, Michigan lily, turtle head, and swamp thistle. The orchid has declined more than 70% from its original county records in the U.S. and protection of this site, along with the adjacent Fair Meadows State Natural Area, will aid in the recovery of this species and ensure the habitat is managed for its long-term survival. Koshkonong Corners is privately owned and was designated a State Natural Area in 2013.

Recreation

Very few State Natural Areas have public facilities, but nearly all are open for a variety of recreational activities as indicated below. Generally, there are no picnic areas, restrooms, or other developments. Parking lots or designated parking areas are noted on individual SNA pages and maps. Trails, if present, are typically undesignated footpaths. If a developed trail is present, it will normally be noted on the SNA map and/or under the "Access" tab. A compass and topographic map or a GPS unit are useful tools for exploring larger, isolated SNAs.
