Demonstration of Intermitttent On/Off Aeration at a
Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant for
Denitrification and Energy Savings
Final Report
Summary
- The intermittent on/off aeration did not affect the effluent BOD5
and TSS concentration. The sludge settleabllity was also not affected. As a result,
electricity cost for aeration could be reduced by approximately 30% by shutting off the
jet aerators for 8 hours every day in the Ashland WWTP.
- By shutting off the jet aerators for 8 hours, nitrate concentrations
were below 5 mg-N/L, compared with to 25 mg-N/L without intermittent on/off aeration.
- Biological phosphorus removal to 1 mg/L was not achieved by the
intermittent on/off aeration even though PAOs seem to be developed in the ditch. More work
needs to be done to investigate the PAO existence and its behavior in the activated sludge
with an intermittent aeration.
