Demonstration of Intermitttent On/Off Aeration at a Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant for Denitrification and Energy Savings

Final Report

Cost Savings

Even though an effluent limit of 1 mg/L of phosphorus concentration was not achieved, the operation of intermittent aeration. The total annual electrical energy and chemical saving was $24,800 with the intermittent operation. Table 4.1 listed the detail of the cost savings.

Table 4.1 Cost Analysis

ANNUAL COST before the project of
intermittent operation
during the project of
intermittent operation
Net Saving
Electrical Energy 24 hr operation 16 hr operation $ 20,400
Liquid Alum 30,800 gal 21,050 gal 4,400
Total     $ 24,800

The saving of liquid alum addition, which is used to remove phosphorus at the Ashland WWTP, is another evidence indicated that PAOs were induced by the operation of intermittent aeration.
