The operation and performance of the intermittent on/off aeration were compared to the continuous aeration. Figure 3.2 shows the effluent BOD₅ and TSS concentrations before and after intermittent on/off operation. The results indicated that the effluent BOD₅ concentration was slightly increased during the beginning of intermittent aeration; however, it was still under the limit of 30 mg/L. The TSS concentration were not affected by the intermittent aeration. The sludge settleability expressed by sludge volume index (SVI) was also not affected by the on/off intermittent operation (Figure 3.3). Updated results have indicated that there was no apparent difference in effluent BOD₅, TSS concentrations and sludge settleability at the Ashland WWTP during the operation of intermittent aeration.
