Demonstration of Intermitttent On/Off Aeration at a Municipal Wastewater Treatment Plant for Denitrification and Energy Savings

Final Report

Intermittent On/Off Aeration

Effluent Quality of Ashland WWTP
Before and After On/Off Intermittent Aeration

The operation and performance of the intermittent on/off aeration were compared to the continuous aeration. Figure 3.2 shows the effluent BOD5 and TSS concentrations before and after intermittent on/off operation. The results indicated that the effluent BOD5 concentration was slightly increased during the beginning of intermittent aeration; however, it was still under the limit of 30 mg/L. The TSS concentration were not affected by the intermittent aeration. The sludge settleability expressed by sludge volume index (SVI) was also not affected by the on/off intermittent operation (Figure 3.3). Updated results have indicated that there was no apparent difference in effluent BOD5, TSS concentrations and sludge settleability at the Ashland WWTP during the operation of intermittent aeration.
