Repairing Wisconsin's Water Heritage
Removing Impairments through Restorations
Once waters are known to be impaired, they move through a series of sequential steps, beginning with "impaired water listing" to "delisting" as a restored aquatic system. View waters in various stages, from listing, to total maximum daily load development, to water restoration.
- A Water is placed on the Impaired Waters List ("303d Listed")
- TMDL is developed ("TMDL Development") || Or, environmental accountability project (EAP) is implemented
These are waters where the TMDL is currently in development or where a different type of restoration project is underway that professionals believe will result in restoration of the water.
- TMDL is published as a draft and public noticed for comments
When total maximum daily load (TMDL) values have been calculated and a report is prepared, that information is available for public comment and revision prior to review and approval by USEPA.
- TMDL is approved by USEPA ("Approved TMDL")
Approved TMDLs are those reports specifying the maximum allowable loads of pollutants to the water underwhich restoration will occur and quality maintained. USEPA approval occurs after the public comments and before implementation.
- TMDL is implemented ("TMDL Implementation")
TMDL implementation occurs when an approved TMDL report is followed by the garnering of resources, partner involvement, and "opportunities" to achieve tangible progress toward water quality restoration.
- Water is Delisted
Waters are delisted from the impaired waters list when their quality is no longer impaired.
