Identifying and Restoring Wisconsin's Impaired Waters

The federal Clean Water Act requires that states identify waters that are not meeting state water quality standards.

Water quality biologists check stream characteristics on impaired streams.

Every two years, Wisconsin and all other states submit a list of waters determined to be "impaired" to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. The list helps develop priorities for restoring the state's waterbodies. Wisconsin submitted its first impaired waters list in 1996 with updates in 1998, 2002, 2004, 2006 and now in 2008.
