Shoreland-Wetland Zoning Jurisdiction

Lake DiagramShoreland-wetlands are those wetlands that are five acres in size or larger, and are located in the shoreland zone. The shoreland zone is land located with 1,000 feet of the ordinary high water mark of a lake, pond, or flowage; or within 300 feet of the ordinary high water mark of a river or stream; or to the landward side of the floodplain, whichever distance is greater.

Counties, cities and villages are required to adopt shoreland-wetland zoning ordinances to regulate activities in shoreland-wetlands. Communities may decide to also zone those wetlands which are smaller than five acres or outside the shoreland zone.
