- Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Data Collection:This monitoring includes collecting data to identify or confirm impaired water listings as well as identifying pollution sources and existing and/or appropriate loads of pollutants.

- Waterbody Use Designations: Waters throughout Wisconsin are monitored on an as-needed basis to determine use designations. In the absence of field data, streams are classified as full fish and aquatic life communities.

- Sport Fisheries Assessment: Assessments of sport fisheries are intensive site or area-specific surveys used to assess the status of unusual fisheries and determine the cause and extent of problems with gamefish populations.

- Aquatic Invasive Species: All aquatic invasive species monitoring efforts listed below are currently in place. The year that sampling was established for the following: zebra mussels, Spiny water fleas, Rusty crayfish, Eurasian water milfoil, and invasive fish species.

- Contaminated Sediments: WDNR has produced guidance documents that describe a multitiered approach to site assessment, which is used for projects funded directly by the Department and for review of site investigations proposed by other entities.

- Enforcement, Spills and Kills: Monitoring helps determine the cause of fish kills or the consequences of a spill and to determine penalties or corrective measures. Also included is monitoring for enforcement actions with environmental data that strengthens the case, determines necessary remediation actions, and often influences the amount of penalties.

- Special Projects and Research: WDNR staff develop special
projects to supplement data collected during Tier 1 monitoring. This
monitoring helps identify, confirm, or quantify problems. Resources are allocated
to support special projects monitoring.
