It´s an exciting time for the Great Lakes. Through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative, the US Congress will provide $475M in funding for Great Lakes restoration. Funds will be distributed by US EPA and other federal agencies through a competitive grant process.
These grants are a tremendous opportunity for Wisconsin and for the Great Lakes. Thanks to the hard work of hundreds of people across the state, a vast array of important Great Lakes project proposals were submitted to EPA on Friday, January 29, 2010. We feel that these projects stand a good chance of bringing new financial resources to Wisconsin. With these resources, we can move closer to our goals for Great Lakes Restoration.
The project proposals submitted to EPA cover a wide range of issues. For example:
- identifying pollution sources at Wisconsin beaches and reducing the number of beach closings
- preventing the introduction and spread of aquatic invasive species
- restoring Wisconsin´s five designated Areas of Concerns in Superior, Marinette, Green Bay, Sheboygan and Milwaukee
The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative is a great down payment on a truly historic effort. Through it, we can work together to protect and restore the most significant fresh water resource on Earth – our Great Lakes.
Additional GLRI Grant Opportunities
While the US EPA proposal deadline has passed, GLRI funding opportunities also exist through other federal agencies. If your agency or organization is involved in Great Lakes restoration, we encourage you to seek funding through other GLRI grant opportunities.
