  You must notify the Department of Natural Resources prior to constructing a private well

  • Who regulates water wells?
  • When do I need approval prior to well construction?
  • Who can construct wells and install pumps?
  • What are the responsibilities of a well constructor to the owner?
  • Are there requirements for my well's location?
  *Note: Since the You And Your Well brochure was last published, a law has been enacted requiring notification to the department prior to construction of wells that produce less than 70 gpm. As in the past, department approval is required before constructing high capacity wells or wells on a high capacity property. (A high capacity property is a property with one or more wells with a combined pumping capacity of greater than 70 gpm.) A few counties also require a well location permit prior to drilling or deepening a well.
