Small Water System Operator Certification Program - Examination Process

Requirement

Other-Than-Municipal (OTM) Community Systems and Nontransient Noncommunity (NTNC) systems are now required to have a designated certified operator managing their systems. This requirement became effective on January 1, 2001. All OTM and NTNC public water systems were required to have their own certified operator or contracted certified operator no later than March 1, 2005.

    Certification exams are held twice a year on the first Wednesdays in May and November.
    • Preregistration is required. The application deadlines are 28 days prior to the exams.
    • Visit the DNR Bureau of Science Services web page for exam dates, deadlines and application forms.
    Examination Fee

    There is a $25 fee to take the examination. Please mail your payment, with your completed application to:

    Examination Time and Locations

    We offer the examination in many different locations throughout the State of Wisconsin. Please refer to the application for time and location, and choose the one that is best for you.

    You will receive a confirmation letter with the exact location of your exam site after your completed application has been processed.

    If the correct fees are not included with your application and your form is not complete, your application will be returned.

    The next statewide Operator Certification exam date for Septage, Waterworks and Wastewater operators are offered on the same day as the Small Water System Operator Certification exam with the same application deadline (see above).
