Valves

Valves are the mechanical devices used to control flow in pipes. Valves come in a variety of styles, including the following:

Main Valves

Main valves are located so that water mains can be isolated for emergency repair or maintenance. They are generally installed at tees or crosses where two or more mains intersect. Main Valves must remain accessible and have the following requirements:

  • They must be operated every two years
  • They must be kept clean so access can be achieved when needed

Service Valves

Service Valves (curbstop valves) are used to isolate a single building from the main. These valves are installed on the service line between the water main and the building, usually near the street curb. Operators should do the following:

  • Know the locations of service valves. Locations should be measured in relation to surrounding buildings or landmarks
  • Make sure the valves are in working order
  • Keep valve boxes free of any foreign materials
