Operator doing a leak check

Leak Detection

Leaks are the most common maintenance problem an operator will encounter with water mains and services. Typically, leaks will occur where pipes interconnect; such as elbows, bends, tees and fittings. Pipes also break due to soil movement, freezing, corrosion, or improper installation.

Water escaping from leaks will generally come to the surface near the location of the leak. However, this may not always be the case when leaks occur on hills, near underground rock crevices or sewer lines, or under frozen ground. Modern leak detection devices are capable of locating such leaks using sound detection.
