Ductile iron main pipes

Water Mains

Water mains are primary pipes which carry water from the source to the storage facilities, and to points along the distribution system. The WDNR requires that mains be constructed of:

  • Cast iron
  • Ductile iron
  • Reinforced concrete
  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Copper
  • Materials specifically approved by the WDNR for restricted or experimental use

Most mains are made of ductile iron or PVC.

All mains must meet American Water Works Association (AWWA) standards, with the exception of approval by the WDNR for special low-pressure applications.
