Vermin-proof well cap

WATER SOURCE MAINTENANCE AND PROTECTION

Wells are the water source for most small water systems in Wisconsin. The water pump will require the most oversight and maintenance. Manufacturer's recommended maintenance schedules should be followed to keep the pump running reliably. Operators should also be aware of any inconsistent sounds indicating pump problems.

In addition to pump maintenance, the following practices should be implemented to protect the well:

  • Keep the area around the well clean and free of any potential sources of contamination
  • Secure the well cap such that there are no holes or gaps where insects can enter
  • Secure the well vent screen and make sure it is in place
  • Monitor water quality for inconsistencies, which may indicate problems
