TYPES OF WELLS A well is any opening into the ground used to obtain water, where the depth of the opening is greater than the largest surface dimension. Well depths can range from a few feet to thousands of feet deep. Most public wells in Wisconsin are 100 feet to 500 feet deep depending on the formation used to obtain water.
