Bacteria

Examples of bacteria that could contaminate water include:

• coliform,
• salmonella,
• Legionella, and
• E. coli,

These types of bacteria are generally attributed to human and animal wastes. While many forms of coliform bacteria are harmless, their presence can be an indication that other more harmful bacteria such as E. coli are present.

Drinking water can be treated effectively with modern disinfection methods such as the addition of chlorine.

Viruses

Examples of some waterborne viruses that could contaminate water include:

• enterovirus,
• rotovirus, and
• hepatitis.

As with bacteria, the presence of viruses in drinking water is also associated with human wastes.
