Management

History of Management

Keizer Lake Wildlife Area’s origin dates back to 1947 when the first purchase was made. The current total acreage was purchased by 1953. These purchases were made due to the quality habitat and heavy hunter use the property experienced even at that time. This is a popular deer, bear, ruffed-grouse and waterfowl hunting area. Fishing is limited to the deeper Big, North and Banach lakes. Eagle and osprey have a long history of nesting on the property.

Management Objective

Today, management consists of timber harvests on the uplands for wildlife habitat benefits and wood products, and the old fields are mainly managed through prescribed burns to maintain warm season grasses and forbs for plant and wildlife diversity. Most trails are gated or bermed to provide quality hunting and hiking experiences.
