Elk Management Plan and Establishment Protocol

In 1995, 25 elk were experimentally reintroduced into the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest near the Town of Clam Lake. They were monitored by a research team from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point until 1999. Once the research was completed, the field responsibility for management of the elk herd was transferred to the Department of Natural Resources.

In September 1999, several public meetings were held throughout the state to share information on the status of the herd and to gather input to guide creation of a draft management plan/environmental assessment and a draft herd establishment protocol. After these documents were completed, they were made available for public review and commentary as a part of the Environmental Analysis process. The plan has been revised in response to the comments received, and was brought before the Natural Resources Board along with the proposed establishment protocol in June for a decision.
