Captive Wildlife

In 2003, Wisconsin Act 56 (or more commonly known as the Captive Wildlife Act), created ch. 169, Stats. This new chapter in state law, created new standards and licenses by which possession for captive wildlife in Wisconsin is regulated. As of January 1, 2003, the effective date of most of the provisions of ch. 169, Stats., game farms, fur farms and other holders of live captive wildlife were subject to regulation under ch. 169, Stats.

This webpage has been created to provide those interested in possessing captive wildlife, whether it be dog trainers, bird hunting preserves, exhibitors, scientific research or captive wild animal farm operators, with an explanation of the new standards established in ch. 169, Stats. as well as the administrative rules which have now been adopted by the department under the authority granted by ch. 169, Stats.
