Avian Influenza

Information for Bird Banders

Shoveler

H5N1 has not been detected in North America and there are no documented cases of human H5N1 infections resulting from contact with wild birds. However bird banders should follow some basic precautions when banding. The following are suggested guidelines to reduce exposure to a variety of diseases that can be carried by wildlife.

  • If a bird or group of birds appears sick, consider not banding those animals. If you come across an unusual situation contact your local DNR service center or call the DNR Bureau of Wildlife Management at 608-266-8204.
  • Consider wearing disposable or rubber gloves, and protective eyewear or a face shield when handling the birds.
  • Wash hands after any bird contact and disinfect equipment between sites.
  • Do not eat, drink, or smoke when handling birds.
  • Launder bird handling bags with detergent as often as possible.
  • If possible, store field gear (including clothing) that has direct bird contact separately from areas of high human use (such as kitchens, small office spaces, etc.).
