Cable Restraints in Wisconsin

A Guide to Responsible Use

Cable Restraints are now legal for the Wisconsin Canine season. This has been made possible due to a three year study conducted by members of the Wisconsin Trappers Association (WTA) and the Department of Natural Resourses. This study, which is discussed in the document below, followed the Best Management Practices (BMP’s) established by the International Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (IAFWA). Cable Restraints have proved to be an efficient and humane tool for trapping canines. Necrospsied animals from this study showed little to no device related injuries from this tool.

We would like to thank the WTA and the Conservation Congress for their hard work and support during the study. Members of the WTA and DNR wildlife staff spent long hours on the trap-line and in the WDNR fur shed, volunteering both time and effort to the study. We would also like to acknowledge the work of Dr. Beth Williams from the University of Wyoming, who conducted all of the necropsy work.

The future use of cable restraints will largely depend upon your responsible actions to prevent restrained animals from becoming entagled. You need to know the rules and regulations; have landowner permission; know the land you’re on well; and make sets where deer and domestics are a minor concern. Remember, Non-entanglement is the key!!
