Help Care for the Dunes Environment
Like a blanket protects us from cold, a cloak of low spreading plants
with their netted roots shields the dunes from drying sunlight and wind.
In
this harsh environment, it may take more than a thousand years to stabilize
the sand and grow a forest. Today this fragile system has protection of
its own. Park visitors are asked not to climb on the sand dunes.
Keep these points in mind when enjoying the park
- Even the casual footstep can tear at the fabric of the dunes.
Please stay on designated trails and stairs.
- The poison ivy that covers the dunes can keep you itching
for days, but it plays a vital role in keeping the dunes in
place
- Threatened plants like dwarf lake irises can be very small. Please
watch your step!
- Please keep your garbage with you and recycle or dispose of
it properly. Trash left at the dunes will be here long after
your visit ends.
